My Quirks:

1. I write notes on scraps of paper like old bills, envelops that the old bills came in, flyers, pamphlets, the kids school papers that don't have to be returned.

2. I prefer to have the window down in the car, as opposed to turning on the air conditioner. The cold air blowing on me gives me a headache.

3. I like to go to the hardware store and walk all of the different aisles, but I'm like a moth when it comes to the lighting aisle. Shiny, bright things...so cool!

4. I like to watch forensic shows, but would probably pass out at a real crime scene.

5. I hate the sound of people trimming their finger nails, or toe nails...especially in public. GET A ROOM PEOPLE!

6. I know most of the lines to the movie "Murder By Death" and I enjoy listening to it when I'm scrapbooking. I have the movie playing downstairs and I've watched it so many times I know what is going on in the scene.

::::::::::::::::Tennis, Anyone?::::::

The free movie was a bust because the rooms were full, so we stopped off at Play It Again Sports to get Rachel a racket for her beginners tennis class next week. The guy didn't have her size so he suggested Target. We left that store and walked down to Books For Less and bought a couple of drawing books. One was how to draw monsters and the other one was how to draw animals. Rachel chose an American Girl Book about Addy. She also got a book called Ghost Writer.
We finally loaded up and went to Target and picked up a racket for Rachel and her siblings. Eve said she wanted to learn tennis, too. Noah said he just wanted to play for fun with his sisters. I called the Community School when I got home and they had an opening in Eve's age group, so I signed her up. She will taking on the same day as Rachel, but a half an hour after Rachel's class is over.

I backed cookies when we got home from the store. I bagged up a dozen and went visiting teaching with Eve. She wanted to tag along.

Not much else, but trying to stay cool.

Take Care! :)

Down and Derby Time:

Third times the charm
Three Strikes you're out
Hat Trick
Three is a magic number

Noah participated in his Cub Scout pack's Pinewood Derby on Friday night. His car was designed as a melting Creamsicle. Noah's car was consistently 3rd in each heat. After the third heat Michael asked Noah how he was doing and Noah responded, "I came in third all three times. HUGGIES?!"

After the 5th heat coming in last Noah said, "This is embarrassing!" After the 6th heat he told my mom, "I'd rather eat my own poop! HUGGIES!?!" Later awards were given out for different categories and Noah won, "The Best Non-Car" category.

"The kids thought it was fun to pretend to be in the gaol because they knew that they weren't going to be a resident there for more than a few miniutes. I was happy they didn't resort to trying to figure out how to create their own shanks. I didn't want to contemplate for too long what the smell of these places were like, or the presence of vermin."

"The story of Matilda, by Raold Dahl, is a family favorite. The Trunchbull is always throwing the kids in "the Chokey" for any reason she wants."

::::::::::::::::::Out And About:::::::

We went to a Wish Day celebration for our niece, Teresa, who is in remission from leukemia. We were scheduled to go to a petting zoo, but a torrential down pour side-lined us to a nearby church. We had fun with the family and the lovely ladies who arrainged the day.

On the way home Noah struck up the "Category Game" that we started last week. The categories today included: Dr. Who, Cyberman, Yellow, Astronomy, Road Kill, Transformer, and Girl Scout cookies. The funniest one was the last category, which Michael announced as we neared our home. He said, "Photosynthesis". To wit, Rachel responded enthusiastically, "We get to talk about cameras!" Laughing, Michael says, "The next categories are "Cameras" and "Blondes". Rachel, quickly, stated she knew what photosynthesis was then gave the definition.

Off to work on some Easter layouts:

What is Made from 100% Girl Scouts?

If you answered Girl Scout cookies you are correct. I got Rachel to smile for this shot by making her say, "SAMOAS!" What an instant response of joy with visions of caramel, chocolate and coconut!

:::::::::::::::::::::"Is That a Euphemism?::::
That is an oft heard question in our house. We have taught our kids the correct terms for things, but the kids hear parts of the body called other things by family and friends so they started to try to figure out as many euphemisms as they could. They realized the process is endless and here is an Indexed Card as evidence of that:

::::::::::::::::::::Recommendation Friday:::::::

Jessica Hagy has completed a book of her hilarious graphs called Indexed. It's for sale for $8.80 at Amazon and they are taking pre-orders.

I would like this idea to become a weekly thing, but we shall see.

I have layouts to post later, but Shabby Miss Jenn wants us to wait a tad bit more.

I hope your weekend is fantastic! Michael and Aaron are running off to hike and camp. They were going to go to Blood Mountain, but changed their mind due to the recent hiker murder. Michael decided to hike there with the kids another time.

I don't know how many of you remember Adam Sandler's bizarre Halloween sketch where he would say stuff like, "I'm crazy pickle arm! Give me some candy!" He would use other inane objects and then demand candy. I thought it was hilarious, so I present to you...Crazy Purse Head!

It has been about a year since I made in Art Trading Cards and I really miss making them. What made me want to jump right in and create some more are found on Sandra Evertson's blog. I love the time elements she used. She also had a great art idea shown on her site that you could do yourself and get your kids involved too. She used ink blot art to make Ink Blot Characters. I thought this was so funky.

Here is an example of my ATCs that I have posted over time, but digging through the archives is a bit of a pain, so I will place them all in this one convenient spot:

Miscellanous Things and Stuff For Today:

This was the little page I turned into Rachel's pre-school teacher for a class book on everyone's families. She was so complimentary saying this was the best page she had ever seen and wanted to know if she could give me a stack of family photos to make an album for her. I blushed.

:::::::::::::The Great Inca Rebellion::::::
This show was fascinating. The forensics were incredible.

Product Description from Amazon.com
History reports that the mighty Inca were swiftly wiped out by a small band of Conquistadors. But, new evidence is being unearthed that may help re-write history. Remains of those who died in battle have been discovered, and for the first time physical evidence is suggesting that Spain's conquest of the Incan Empire may have actually taken twenty years. Brought to life through CGI reconstruction and reenactments, the untold epic saga of decades of guerilla warfare and rebellion are finally revealed as National Geographic uncovers the truth behind the Inca's last stand.

:::::::::::::Prop of the Day::::::

I had an immediate and professional response to reorder at no charge. This afternoon the package was open, but the contents were still shrink wrapped. I got on Amazon's site and they have a feature that calls their representative for you. I love this! I talked to a nice guy who took care of the cancellation right away. The "Daddy of the Day" Award Goes to...

Michael! Yes, folks he wins the prize for two astounding feats of love and talent.

Michael felt bad that Rachel was having to go around with everything blurry, so he ran over to the opticians on his lunch break with her broken glasses. The glasses were still under warranty, so the manager popped the lenses into a similar frame. Michael decided to take them right home rather than wait until after work, so Rachel could do what she loves best...read!
You will also notice in the photo that Rachel is popping a piece of fudge in her mouth, but it isn't just any fudge folks! NO! It is PERFECT FUDGE! Michael promised the kids that on Family Home Evening he would make fudge. True to his promise this confectionary miracle was brought forth! This morning Noah said..."Mom, you've got to try these! But ya' know his brownies are just as good!"

:::::::::::::::Rachel Got Caught::::::::

reading that is! A little while after Michael went back to work and I was putting away laundry I saw that Aaron's bedroom door was closed. I wondered if the kids had taken Jasper the ferret into play. I cautiously opened the door and Rachel was lying on the floor next to the bedroom window. She gave me a guilty look. I laughed at her when I realized she was reading ahead in our family reading book. I told her she could continue reading if she promised not to tell anyone what she read, didn't look board during reading time and didn't read the ending first. With her word given I went to call my mom and Michael to quiz them what they thought Rachel might be caught doing. My mom just laughed and Michael said reading right away. I love that bookish girly!

::::::::::::::Will Try Again:::::::

today to upload vacation photos to our family website. The photos are on Michael's laptop and he takes it with him to work and by the time he got home I had to run off to the store and buy school supplies, then home for family time and there is this thing called "SLEEP" calling my name. So, perhaps today will be the day?!?!

****Warning: Serious post ahead!

::::::::::::::The Lucifer Effect::::::::

I have only been able to finish the first chapter, so far, but I am so impressed with the well thought out and expertly presented material in this book. Phillip Zimbardo ask two questions that he wants the reader to ask themselves in the first chapter. The first question is: "Am I capable of Evil?". The second question comes at the end of the chapter: "Are you capable of becoming a hero?".

Zimbardo used M.C. Esher's "Circle Limit IV also titled "Devils and Angels" to illustrate the point that there are good and evil co-exist.
He also makes the point with the illustration that angels can become devils and that devils can become angels. He looks at the world through a situational lens as opposed to a dispositional one. He sees the dispositional lens limiting because it looks for the root cause within an individual instead of looking at the situational variables that act on someone that inturn creates behaviors.

He pointed out that using the word "animal" to describe another human being effectively dehumanizes them and then what what happens to them by your own hand, or that of another is of no consequence. And disturbingly a person only has to over hear someone else make a reference to a person or group as an "animal" for it to change their mindset. Zimbardo uses examples from the atrocities in Rwanda and the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq to explain how quickly murder, rape and humilitating another human can change our outlook to cold calculating depravity.

Zimbardo promises to offer ways to guard ourselves against making the choice to do evil at the end of the book. He states, "we can become wise and wily consumers instead of being easily influenced by authorities, group dynamics, persuasive appeals, and compliance strategies." (p.21). He believes we can all be heros in the right situational moment.

One of the strongest impressions I recieved from this first chapter was that inaction is evil just as an action. I was also touched by the excerpt from Paradise Lost John Milton that was used in the beginning: "The mind is its own place, and in it can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven."

There is so much to think about and my heart is heavy with the dark parts of humanity...if you can call it humanity when we act so horribly to one another. I like to remember the admonition of the Savior recorded in John 13:34 " A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another".

Noah's World:

Torn and Ripped #2 by Jen Caputo, Crayon Alpha and Doodle by Ida, Music doodles and Space Doodles, and Door doodle by Kate Hadfield, Dear Diary by Erica Hite, Font: Chalkdust, Easter Stickers by Sausan, pastic letters by Nancy Comelab, Gltter frame (modified) by Traci Reed

The kids are back in the hiz'ouse! The noise has returned to push away the serenity, but it's nice to get the hugs. There were a few Noah stories from Granny Alice which I thought it would be fun to relate.

Story #1:

The kids had just had a fun couple of hours at a bounce house where they got to jump on inflated toys, so Granny Alice took them for lunch at a local diner called Truetts. For some reason Eve decided to lick the ketchup on the bottle and set it back on the table...YUCK! Noah, my germ-a-phobe, was mortified. He had fries with no ketchup and he wasn't about to use the pre-licked bottled version. When the waitress came by to see if they needed anything Noah told her about his sister's licking incident. Mind you, this is serious business to Noah and their table was situated in the center of the restaurant, making them quite literally, the center of attention. The waitress returned quickly with a new bottle that she assured him had never been licked. Noah set immediately to slathering ketchup onto his plate.

What we learn from this: Don't use the ketchup after Eve Taylor has sat at the table.

Story #2:

Noah decided to take a bath in Granny Alice's garden tub. He threw off his clothes to the floor where they got damp, so Granny Alice picked them up and threw them into the washing machine with the rest of the load. When Noah got out he was howling about not having any underwear. Granny told them they were wet and in the wash. He couldn't find any other underwear and was complaining that someone must have taken them. Granny offered him underwear from everyone else in the house, which he soundly refused. He complained bitterly that his clothes had been just fine and he couldn't see why she had put them in the wash. This little unclad boy sat on the floor lamenting, loudly, his situation. By 9:15pm Granny Alice could take it no more and ran to Walmart just in time to grab a couple of pairs of Transformer underwear. When she got to the house and handed the underwear to Noah. He instantly brightened up and said, "You bought new underwear for me?! I'll wear this one and leave one for here." Then, in his most Noah way, opened his arms wide and said, "How about a hug!" I suppose this is some innate force in Noah to keep him alive after some of the silly sheninagins he pulls.

What we learn from this: If you act like a fool for over an hour be willing to smile and offer a hug to the person you have made miserable.

Story #3

Actually, technically...occurred on Friday before Noah went visit Granny Alice's house. Noah was at the Friday sleepover at Granny Sue Towhey's house and he told her lovingly, "Your my favorite granny!" Then, he looked rather pensive and said, "Well, that other granny, Alice, I love her just as much, too!" Granny Sue just had to laugh.

What we learn from this: Keep all your bases covered!

Just passing on some silly stories and wisdom!

Smiles!

::::::::::::::::::So, What Happened to the Chicken? ::::::::

Chicken is from Happy Easter by Studio Sausan at Scrapbookgraphics

This infamous question is asked by Michael before family reading time. The question is always directed at Noah who has biblionarcolepsy (falls asleep when a book is being read to him). Noah hasn't fallen for it yet. I filled him in on the last two chapters he missed in our current book, The Sisters Grimm, The Fairy Tale Detectives, because he had fallen asleep and the others begged to forge ahead without him. Noah was actually awake last night and working on his current Bionicle creation, when Michael asked one of his silly chicken questions. Noah rolled his eyes and said "There was no chicken!" The older kids are beginning to add an entire sub plot to the story about this chicken. There is something really great about families and their inside jokes.

:::::::::::::::Inventor Day::::::::

Aaron and I watched shows on Inventors as a part of our day. We learned about: Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, James Watt, Louis Pasteur, The Wright Brothers and Eli Whitney. Aaron was fascinated that all of these men were proficient at things at his age. I wonder if that message will sink in?

::::::::::::::Acting Debut:::::::::

Noah is a swordfish guard in his first grade production of "Go Fish". He has one line and he is sooooo excited.

::::::::::::::Vacation Plans:::::::

There are so many things to see on our route to Niagara Falls. Our planned detours should be a lot of fun. We are using Frommer's Guide and Fodor's to get the information about local spots and suggestions from ladies at Digishoptalk. When we stop in New York City I considered finding the kids an inexpensive Broadway show and Blue Man Group: Tubes looked really cool, but the ticket prices I found were $78.00 each. I wonder if they come cheaper than that? The guide gives approximate hotdog stand and pizza by the slice prices that seem reasonable. The ladies at Digishoptalk said we need to go to Serendipity's for a Frozen Hot Chocolate. I looked it up and boy that place made me gain five pounds from reading the menu.
Our current goal is finding a good value motel that we can park our car, grab a shower and easy access to Manhattan.
I'm enjoying reading about the myriad of sites going North. I hope we can structure our itinerary enough that when we want to be spontaneous we can. (This really does make sense!)

Smiles!

It's Always Somethin' :

:::::::::::::::::::Noah's Nasty Injury:::::::

Text: Noah came home from school with his hands cupped in front of him. He had a slight simian pose. I asked him what happened as I looked at the palms of his hands. He said he had been playing on the monkeybars and was only one bar from the end. He said his hands felt hot, so he looked at them and they were blistered. The teacher sent him to the clinic where they put a cold compress on his palms. She gave him a bunch of bandaids, but he doesn't want anything on his hands at all!

Monday, Monday...

so good to me. (Mamas & the Papas).

I hope y'all had a marvelous Mother's Day! I started the day nervous because I had to lead the Primary Children singing in the Chapel for all the moms and grandmas. The pianist started a bit early because she couldn't see her own granddaughter walking along the front. There were too many tall kids in her line of sight to me, but we were only a couple of beats behind and caught up. The second song about grandmother was adorable and the kids remembered to pause. I must have been a bit distracting because I was on the middle pew four rows back, so the kids would be able to see me. I was swayin' and gesticulating (some people who lead music call it "conducting" from what I hear)! All in all...SUCCESS!

After Church we watched a Disney movie called "Hot Lead and Cold Feet" with Jim Dale who also narrates the Harry Potter book series. Then, I went and fell asleep for a 2 hour nap. BLISS!

During the movie I created this layout:

Michael decided to do an impromptu experiment with the lettuce I froze to feed the tadpoles. He grabbed the lettuce and invited Rachel and Noah watch him lob the lettuce into the air. The lettuce, thanks to gravity, came smashing in lots of pieces all over the concrete. Done repeatedly it creates lots of little pieces of lettuce. AHHH! The joy of science!

We are now watching the Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith. I will review tomorrow.
