Fahgettaboudit!

That was the title in my head when I was thinking about the history stories in this first book review:

I had a good laugh along with learning some changes to history as researched by Graeme Donald. There always seems to be a caveat to any historical story, so I am even skeptical about these changes, but they are plausible. I was intrigued by the theory that many of the presumed bubonic plague cases might have actually been anthrax. For those who love to learn about history, but think it a bit dry this book is up your alley.

This book brought back a bit of nostalgia. The main character's mother is practicing for her appearance on the Twenty-Five Thousand Dollar Pyramid. That was one of the many t.v. game shows that I loved to watch. Miranda is a 6th grader who is a latch key kid who can't figure out what is going on with her best friend Sal. New York City is the setting and Miranda begins to get mysterious notes that spook her. A thread that runs through the book is the time traveling, science fictions story by Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle Time.

This book combined layered characters, science fiction, friendship, growing up and questioning how far you might go to right a wrong. A fantastic book for tweens to adults.

The setting for this book is Adenville, Utah where only a few towns folk are not Mormons. Tom, The Great Brain, and is brothers and mom and dad are part of the non-Mormon contingent. Tom and his brothers hold their own in the hard scrabble life of kids growing up at the end of the 1800's. In this town you have to show your strong, so you won't get beat up. Tom is always looking for a way to make a penny and his family keep him, somewhat, in check...but not much.
This book was recommended to me by a friend with the review that it was a lot of fun. I would have to say that there are, indeed, many adventures that the boys get into throughout the book, but the undertones maintained a mean-spiritedness that Rachel and I found distasteful reminding us of how we felt while reading The Diary of A Wimpy Kid. I felt that the entire book was a set up for the last page, which surprisingly delivers. Unfortunately, there are the rest of the pages that led up to that last one that you have to read. Simply not a fun book for our family read.

As I read this book absentmindedly, then more nervously scratching at a couple of mosquito bites on my neck, I was drawn in with the clear and engaging prose of Sonia Shah. She presented the history of Malaria and the mosquito as the vector for it's spread in a fascinating way. She explains the health consequences of malaria and how quickly and easily it can be transmitted throughout the world. She explains the political and economic ramifications of this plasmodium parasite and doesn't genuflect to deep pocket backers of malaria research who throw money at the problem in the genuine effort to fix the problem without listening to and looking at other more realistic scientific options. The plasmodium parasite has an ability to quickly adapt to the changing environment and pesticides while researchers continue to seek a way to defeat it's transmission.

Grab a hankie my friends! This book plucks all the heart strings. Petey is born with a severe case of cerebral palsy and also given the diagnosis of "Idiot" though he doesn't have a mental deficit. His mother and father are unprepared or able to take care of Petey's physical needs and those of their older children who feel neglected by all of the care required by Petey. At the age of 2 Petey goes to a state asylum. Over the years Petey's natural good nature helps him make friends, but most move on. Finally a young boy befriends Petey and learns that family can be more than biological. Petey also teaches those around him to appreciate things that are taken for granted.

Mo Willems can make Naked Mole Rats look great. This book was a fun read about being an individual...with style.

A rather clinical approach, not surprising, for the history of the Epidemic Intelligence Service. The evolution of this program to help locate the vectors and origins of epidemics. They can upset people because they are not on the scene as health care providers. They are masters at asking pertinent questions to find the source of the outbreaks through interviews and on sight detective work. There was a lot of information to present, which I'm sure was daunting. Though I found the subject fascinating I kept comparing this work to the writing of the development of forensics in the U.S. by Deborah Blum titled, The Poisoner's Handbook. Blum's prose is captivating, while Pendergast is a bit dry. I still found the characters and the development of the E.I.S. worth the read.

Learning to say "it's my fault" and "I'm sorry" is a hard lesson for many of us. This gooey mess of a book brings it home in a creative, eye-catching way. A Dr. Seuss I should have read eons ago. A simple message that can accomplish great things.

::::::::::::::::Conversations with Noah and Eve

On our return from the dentist office Noah and Eve got into a discussion about children and marriage.

Noah: I'm never getting married. I'm going to adopt.

me: You don't want any one who can help you?

Noah: No. I can do it.

Eve: Are you going to adopt a boy or a girl?

Noah: It will probably be a dude.

me: Will you make him wear a belt and get a haircut? (This is a reference to our discussion on Sunday about wearing a belt and getting his hair cut.)

Noah: Yeah, I'll make him wear a belt sometimes, but no ties. I hate ties.

Eve: Why not adopt a girl they don't wear belts.

Noah: I don't understand girls. I don't get them at all.

:::::::::::::Michael and Rachel Circulating the Room:::::::

Rachel requested a room makeover. She firmly stated that she had outgrown pink and lavender along time ago (this did not take into account that Eve was 7 and still liked it). We went to the home improvement stores to get paint samples. She did get final approval with Eve, since they share the room. She chose "Aegean Blue" and "Blue Suede". The lighter color matched exactly to the sample, but the darker bottom color came out greener, but it still looked good so we went with it. I cut it everything and Michael did a couple of coats of the lighter top color before leaving for Philmont, NM with Aaron. Eve cried that the castle Michael painted would be gone, but Michael assured her it would be okay and that we would take a photo.

Bye, our Castle in the Sky...

I patched all the little nail and pin holes.

I finished touch ups on the top, painted the bottom and the chair rail:

When Michael got home he helped Rachel put up her repositionable vinyl circles in chocolate brown and white:

I had already hung the Japanese paper lantern I found at Kohl's department store:

The company sent a complimentary pair of chocolate brown butterflies:

Michael found a salvaged cork board for some of the girls' artwork:

Rachel loves her Photo booth pics with her brother Noah:
Rachel displays a letter and magazine photo from her friend Julia (apparently there is some inside joke about llamas). She also has her detailed map of "Rachovia" (a town from her imagination...or is it? The photo of the crazy, long curly fry was a keeper too.

:::::::::::::Next post should have Philmont photos from Michael and Aaron's trip.

Smiles and thank you to Michael for fixing the computer!

:::::::::::::Water Heater::::::::::::

Michael and I spent Saturday installing a new 40 gallon water heater. We have a small house and the 15 to 20 year window to recoup the cost of a tankless system had us replace our old one with the same system albeit more efficient. I was the gopher girl for odds and ends needed to finish the task. After Michael dropped molton solder on his finger he related this fact: Your wound self-cauterizes...isn't that neat?! He accidently got some molton solder on my exposed toe (yes, he advised me to put on more than my Croc sandals for this activity...but NOOOOO! I hate shoes...so confining.). There was standing water from a previous test on the sweated pipe that failed and the molton solder hit the water and popped off like grease in a frying pan and landing on the third toe of my right foot. Luckily, it wasn't as bad as Michael's finger. There is a bit of a leak in the cold water side of the connection to the water heater. To fix it we would have to shut off the cold and hot water at the valves and drain the new tank, cut the pipe to the cold, tighten it down, make a new connection and sweat the pipe, again. Michael is so thrilled with this perspective that he is in a "Let's just watch it for a bit and see how bad the leak is." I translate that into, "My finger really hurts and I really don't want to do this again, but I know I'll have to fix it soon!" It's nice to have such a handy guy around! He showed my how to cut pipe with the cutting tool, how to turn off the main gas to the house, the main water cut off and explained along the way what the different pipes did and how the water heater works. We even took the opportunity to clean the part of the duct system Michael knocked off wall trying to solder the cold water pipe. Nasty dust...just NASTY!

Your Karaoke Theme Song is "Baby Got Back"

You're a total show off who is willing to risk looking like a fool to get a few laughs.
In fact, you'll go for the cheap laugh if you need to... because it's better than no reaction!

Your friends can count on you to get a party started, and you'll party hard until you can't remember their names.
You're charismatic, charming, and a total character. With or without a few drinks in you.

You might also sing: "I Touch Myself," "Oops I Did it Again," or "My Humps"

Stay away from people who sing: "Candle in the Wind"

You Are Banana Pocky

Your attitude: fun and lighthearted
Unique and unforgettable
You are cutie everyone falls for

Your Driving Is is: 48% Male, 52% Female

According to studies, you drive both like a guy and a girl.
This means you're a pretty average driver, with typical quirks.
Occasionally you're frustrated and or a little reckless, but that's the exception - not the norm.

::::::::::Really Cool:::::::

I saw this on Julie P.'s site and took the test twice. My first score was 42% bionic. The great thing about this test is that the five tests are the same, but the questions with in the test are different, so when you retest you aren't repeating what you've already seen. There is one test, now I think about, on reflexes that is the same, so 4 out of 5 are different.

::::::::::::::::Sunday Family Fun::::::::

For our joint Family Home Evening we went to Stephen and Shelene's house. The kids really look forward to playing with their cousins. The food for the evening was soups and stews. Michael made homemade chicken soup with noodles. Our kids kept asking for more of daddy's chicken soup. Eve even wants the left over soup for breakfast. What a compliment for Michael! There was also a savory and spicy chili by Marcus and Laura, Stephen made a delicious crab chowder, Melissa brought some yummy potato soup, Christopher made "George" a concoction of chicken and rice soup all his own...and quite tasty. Benjamin and Missy made stewed cabbage. Shelene supplied one of my favorites, cornbread...rub the tummy good stuff! There was also some very good sourdough bread. Noah at Ritz crackers...what a nut!
The lesson for the evening had us write positive traits about the others in the room. Stephen shared how his positive attitude often creates an atmosphere that allows and prompts people to be positive in return. He encouraged to look at the cards that had what people said about us and build on those and add to them.

::::::::::::::::::What You Hear While Making Soup:::::::

Michael called me downstairs while he was working on the chicken soup and said I've got to tell you what Noah said before I forget it. (Noah and Aaron were playing some game with their Legos at the time).

Noah: "Suppose I were to go back in time and bump into my kid self and my kid self would probably say, "Who are you?" and I would have to say, "Let's just say we're related."

Michael and I just laughed and Rachel was listening to this too and shaking her head.

:::::::::::::Noah Said It So It Must Be...:::

true?

Hmmm... This was an observation Noah imparted to me shortly before bedtime: "Mostly just sophisticated words use 'Q'."

When I informed Michael about what Noah said he quickly come up with several words that weren't sophisticated at all. What a spoil sport!

:::::::::::::Water Heater Woes::::::

Our old water heater has decided to leak all over the floor. It is original to the house, so no real surprise...just annoying. Michael and I will be working to replace it on Saturday.

:::::::::::::Emotions Revealed:::::::::::::

I have some things I will write about next time. This is quite an insightful book. I am learning about autoappraisers and refractory periods. Really interesting stuff.

:::::::::::::Swimming Lessons::::::::::::::

The kids are doing pretty well. Eve is the most enthusiastic and fun to watch. When she knew it was near time to go to practice yesterday she got ready and wanted to sit in the car and wait for us to follow. We still had a half an hour before we were going to leave.

I hope y'all have a great weekend!

Music personality:

I am blogging and listening to my new music downloads from walm@rt.com. I think music is an interesting view into personalities, so I will post these for public review. I have a rather eclectic taste in music, so here it goes:

Stitched Up by Herbie Hancock featuring John Mayer
Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts (I really enjoy watching the movie Cars)
Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer
Still the One by Orleans
Real Wild Child by Iggy Pop (this totally peps me up)
Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw
Cha Cha Slide by Mr. C (The Original Live version...it annoys Michael, though)
Real Gone by Sheryl Crowe (also from the movie Cars)
My Little Girl by Tim McGraw (It makes me reflect on my daughters' growing up)
Where the Green Grass Grows by Tim McGraw (Really enjoy singing along with this one)

Here are a few earlier downloads I added to burn a cd for the car:

Through Being Cool by They Might be Giants
Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield
Upside Down by Jack Johnson
Should I Stay of Should I Go by The Clash
Love Song by The Cure
Friday I'm in Love by The Cure

Another Cd we are listening to is Weird Al's new one: Straight Outta Lynwood

Michael says he identifies with a large percentage of the song "White and Nerdy".

:::::::::BTW:::::::::::::
Eve was quoting large amounts of dialogue from Spongebob today. My kids really need to get over their colds and go out to play!!!!!!!

:::::::::My Current Read:::::

Michael thought I would be interested in this book, so he checked it out for me at the library. I find forensics fascinating, but I don't watch CSI or any of those prime time shows. On the weekends I catch Forensic Files, Skeleton Stories, Cold Case Files are some show of that nature on cable at my mom's house. I learned from the show Skeleton Stories that because I'm a caucasian female I have a protuding spot underneath my nasal cavity that will hold a pen. This is one way of discerning race from a skull. In middle and high school I would show my friends a trick I had of moving a pen from my mouth to my upper lip, then back to my mouth, flip the pen around and stick it back to my upper lip. I didn't realize my race had anything to do with my ability to pull that trick off.

:::::::::::::::::HOUSE STUFF:::::::::::

The guys from Overhead Door Company came and installed our new garage door a couple of days ago. It is a carriage door with bean hinges. I'll try to remember to snap some photos.

Michael was able to replace the hinge on one of our base cabinets I broke when I incorrectly tried to hammer in the plate.

More demolition on the back deck tomorrow if a couple of our friends can come by a rip up deck boards.

Ciao!

Here are Some Renovation Photos:

We are by no means finished. We are going to add pendant lights above the sink and eyeball focusing recessed lights above the cooktop. We want to replace the kitchen chandelier, but can't find one we like, so far.

These photos show the tray ceiling my dad built in our bedroom and the bottom is the kitchen. The weird stuff on the sheet rock in the kitchen is some kind of adhesive used to stick laminate to the wall as a backsplash.

Tomorrow the gutter guy is supposed to come and replace our gutters.

Happy Anniversary to Us:

17 Years, today!

Still the One by Orleans:

We've been together since way back when
Sometimes I never want to see you again
But I want you to know, after all these years
You're still the one I want whisperin' in my ear

You're still the one I want to talk to in bed
Still the one that turns my head
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

I looked at your face every day
But I never saw it 'til I went away
When winter came, I just wanted to go
Deep in the desert, I longed for the snow

You're still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one that's my better half
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You're still the one that makes me strong
Still the one I want to take along
We're still having fun, and you're still the one (yes you are!)

Changing, our love is going gold
Even though we grow old, it grows new

You're still the one that I love to touch
Still the one and I can't get enough
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You're still the one who can scratch my itch
Still the one and I wouldn't switch
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You're still the one that makes me shout
Still the one that I dream about
We're still having fun, and you're still the one...

Michael and I went out to celebrate at Pappadeux's. I had a scrumptious blackened Mahi Mahi with dirty rice and crawfish etouffee. Michael had blackened tuna with dirty rice and green beans. We finished up with a shared dessert of dark chocolate brownie with icecream, fresh whipped creme and a strawberry. I felt like Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I was waiting for the Oompa Loompas to send a contingent to roll me out of the restaurant and chant some catch rhyme about over eating on your anniversary.

Here is a layout of my mercurial pre-teen at her charming best:

:::::::::::EXAMPLE:::::::::::::

Frequently I wonder what my children pick up from my example and today I got a glimpse into what Eve has picked up. While I was putting the engineered floor together in the bedroom Eve said very happily, "I want to be like a mommy, so I need a hammer next to me!" Which leads me to wonder if she will have her own show on public television some day? She's a quick study, so I wouldn't be surprised.

::::::::::GIVING::::::::::::::

Noah and I were in the car the other day and he informed my very seriously, "Mom, Christmas is REALLY all about giving." My response was, "I bet what you really mean is that Christmas is all about GIVING to YOU!" Noah said, "Well, that's true, but you should also give to other people."

::::::::::More Doubles:::::::::::::

My dad is almost finished with the double tray ceiling and it simply rocks, people!

Our double oven arrived from California today and Michael is looking sooooo forward to splicing the electrical cord! The ovens look quite handsome!

::::::::::::::Bedtime Reading::::::::::::

We have started Peter Pan in Scarlet and the first chapter has sucked us right in to the story.

By the way, Book the 13 by Lemony Snicket was great! The Chapter about being in "the dark" had me rolling!

:::::::::::::Template made:::::::::

Two men came over yesterday to create a template for our granite counter top. We have opted for Absolute Black granite. So, today we run around to the credit union to get the money to pay for that and then off to Ikea for the last of the cabinets.
