Feeling Puny

Howdy folks! I am feeling a bit under the weather today. My tonsils are swollen, but I don't have a fever, so who knows what I'm harboring.

::::::::::::::::::::::Yesterday::::::::::::::

was a busy one. The sister missionaries from our church came over for dinner. We prepared breakfast for dinner. We had bacon, french toast and scrambled eggs. The sisters were adventurous and poured Pomegranate 7Up into their orange juice. The kids were their usually rowdy selves. At one point, we got on the subject of animals who run in front of cars like opossums and deer. This sequed into Noah wanting to tell the missionaries one of his favorite jokes which starts out like this: What is the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? At this point Michael and I frantically call him off before he can give the punch line. The sister missionaries just looked at me and laughed because I couldn't stop laughing and had turned beet red. So, the kids started telling more benign jokes. Rachel new several blonde jokes and their were a couple from the show The Vicar of Dibley that the kids could share.

:::::::::::::::::::::::Wilton Cake Art I:::::::

I ran off to take my first cake decorating class and got there with 5 minutes to spare. We learned about the recipes and uses for the different consistencies of icing and some basic frosting methods. My homework assignment is to bake a cake and have it frosted and ready for decorating next week.

:::::::::::::::::::::::Court of Honor::::::::

Aaron and Michael have a Court of Honor tonight for Scouts. Michael took the day off because he has been run ragged at work and home for a couple of weeks and needed to slow down. Unfortunately, he has to run to Lawrenceville to pick up the badges because the person that said they could pick them up Sunday has a meeting downtown and can't make it out there. Typical.

:::::::::::::::::::::::Weekend Update:::::::::::::::

I almost forgot to talk about our fun trip to Shakespeare's Tavern. The night was frigid, but it was just fine inside the tavern. We had balcony seats, which was great to see all parts of the stage at once. The play for the evening was "Twelfth Night". The actors did a marvelous job. Michael and I took his mom and my mother to see the play. The music for the play was just perfect, too. We ate at the tavern and the food was rather tasty. I had the sheperd's pie, Michael had the Hearty Lentil soup, Sydney had the Cornish Pasty and my mom opted for the Salmon and Leek pie. YUM! During intermission Michael had a apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. So, we were well fed and the play was awesome. When we left the downtown Atlanta night scene was just getting started and the some homeless people were outside the door.

Michael and I want to bring Aaron and Rachel back to the tavern to see "A Midsummer's Night Dream". We thought it would be fun to have Michael's family and my mom to return during the holidays at the end of the year to see "A Christmas Carol". We will have to see if any of them are interested.

I'm going to go take a lie down and read.

Smiles!

Pure Silliness and A Laugh

I hope your Christmas festivities are going well! Here is just some things that make me laugh.

Santa Doodles by Kate Hadfield
Glitter Glue by Flergs

:::::::::::Emo Philips:::::::::

A sketch that makes me laugh:

::::::::::::Spiral Frog Downloads::::::

The site has several cool items from Orson Welles. I was able to get The Christmas Carol with Lionel Barrymore as Scrooge in the old radio production. It is wowee wow wow cool!

I also got the song "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige. I love the line when she says "Let's get it percolating...". I used to watch my stepmother's old coffee pot percolate and I think the imagery is so perfect.

Several songs by 3 Doors Down: "Kryptonite", "Be Like That", "When I'm Gone", and "Here Without You".

A Scottish band from the 80's that I really liked called, strangely enough, Texas. I downloaded "In My Heart" and "Mothers Heaven".

:::::::::::::::Marshmallow Guns:::::::

Michael, Aaron and I went to Home Depot the other day and got 1/2 inch pvc, with non-threaded T fittings and caps to make miniature marshmallow shooting guns. Michael tested the full length of pipe out by shooting booth Aaron and me with marshmallows he had brought for testing purposes. Those things hum and have quite an impact. Today was spent with Michael putting these little babies together. Each is coated with colored duct tape to show ownership. Mine has a combination of green and blue. Christmas day should be interesting, indeed. We are all going to end up with small little stick welts.

:::::::::::::::Free Rice Update:::::

I'm up to 25,200 grains of rice. I'm having a blast playing along and learning new words. It gives me something to do in between tying Aaron's fleece blanket. :)

:::::::::::::::Tomorrow Calls For...

the baking of more baklava.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Say What???

I was driving the kids over to sleepover night at my mom's house and the song "Long Train Runnin'" by the Doobie Brothers came on the radio. I told her I liked this song as a kid when I was about Noah's age. I told her I liked the harmonica, especially, in the song. Rachel responded excitedly, "I like it too! I can't believe we like the same song. The harmonica sound makes me think of what it might be like on a ranch, or in the desert...or in jail!"

Hey if that isn't insight I'm not sure what is!

::::::::::::Where Is A Video Camera....:::::

when you need one? As we were channel surfing during this same loud car ride to my mom's I thought it would be fun to stop on the song "Pieces of Me" by Ashlee Simpson to annoy Aaron in the backseat. Well he ended up making everyone laugh while doing a lip sync and crazy pantomimes to the music. I'm so glad I didn't wreck because I kept glancing in my rear view mirror to watch his crazy antics. He was very funny!

::::::::::::Highland Games:::::::

As my family likes to joke..."If it's not Scottish it's cr@p!" My mom and Aaron are planning on going to the Highland Games at Stone Mountain Park. The Highland Games are almost like a journey to Mecca for my mom. Alex Beaton probably sets aside 10 minutes of his schedule if he's in Georgia for a chat and photo opp!
Another favorite is finding anyone to sing the "Scotsman Song". It makes me laugh every time.

::::::::::::::Report Cards:::::::

came today. Rachel actually kept bugging me to look at hers. The kids both did great. Rachel does need to work on her math facts, but her teacher said she is an enthusiastic learner. I can attest to that. I had a Life Science video about viruses, bacteria and allergies that Aaron watched earlier in the day. I came down to tell Rachel and the others to get ready to get in the car and she said, "Just a minute we're watching this cool video on viruses and bacteria."

:::::::::::::::Wiley Miller::

Michael and I both enjoy his cartoon and I read his children's book The Extraordinary Tales of Ordinary Basil to myself last week. This week I put it in as a read before our regularly scheduled book. Noah can usually be found in a supine position during reading time, but with this book he was perched up next to me with his chin on my shoulder eager for the next word. He would get so upset when I said it was bed time. We finished the book yesterday and he asked when I could get the next in the series. I'll have to start reading to him from the Sunday comics until the next book is published...if one is forthcoming.

Michael quipped to me the other day that he thinks that he and Wiley Miller think so much alike that with two people in the world so similar that one of them is redundant. Since Wiley Miller is a better artist and conveys his thoughts so much more succinctly that Michael must me the redundant one. I told him pish-posh on that. Mr. Miller would have to come over and fix tasty Japanese cuisine and fix all the stuff that breaks at our house and I'm pretty sure he won't so Michael's place in the world is secure. I'm not sure he was at all comforted by my words.

:::::::::::::Doobie Brothers:::::

That name always made me laugh as a kid...still does a bit. This group makes me tap my feet and sing out loud. And the two best places to sing are in the shower and the car. Since I don't have a radio in my shower I can only sing along in my car. "Black Water" came on the other day and that is one of my favorite songs to belt out with the boys on the radio. What songs do you like to sing with gusto?

:::::::::::::Key Rings:::::::::

I was thinking about my key ring because Eve always wants me to detach what I have on the ring and let her play with it while I drive. My mother bought me a little multi-buttoned thingy that plays sound bites from the "Blues Brothers". The kids think it's hilarious and they have never seen the movie. It came on the other day on one of the channels and was so censored you couldn't figure out why the nun got mad at Jake and Elwood.

Do you have something cool on your key ring? Can you tell the house is empty, except for Jasper the Ferret, because I'm talking to the computer?

I hope y'all have a fantabulous weekend!

Having some more fun with these un-Historical layouts:

has little great effect on my melanily challenged skin tone. I am a bit crispy after yesterdays swim. We also stayed out in the pool for about 4 hours. The water was cool and salty and the kids were like a little school of fish. There were aunts, uncles and cousins, oh my! The kids barely ever got out of the water. Noah is so close to being able to make it across the length of the pool. Rachel was bravely scooting around in all directions and Aaron showed off what he had time to learn in his swimming class. They all need to learn technique, so I will need to sign them up for that type of class. Eve took a couple of dunks under when she fell off her noodle, but she desperately wanted, "to be like everybody else". She wanted to take off her floaty suit and be a big kid.

On the way home we stopped for ice cream. Eve looked like she was attacked by a chocolate ice cream monster, since that substance covered her in spots from nose to toe.

The kids were invited to spend the night with my parents, so after a bath for the whole tribe we loaded up for the short drive. My mother made the kids some grits for dinner. All of them, save Aaron, will eat grits any time of the day if granny makes it.
Jim was able to acquire a target, arrows and bows for the kids to practice archery which is going to be such fun.
Michael and I stayed to watch "The African Queen" with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Jim said he saw that it was on and set it on the channel for our arrival. How sweet! I am so impressed by the acting of those two characters. They are brave, stubborn, inventive and loving. The leech scene gets me everytime! If you haven't seen this film I highly recommend it!

I'm off to apply more aloe with lidocaine...or is that lidocaine with aloe?

They're Back!

Created using the Einstein generator http://www.hetemeel.com/einsteinform.php

Michael and Aaron came home around 2 pm., yesterday. The original plan had been for Michael to come home late Thursday night and Aaron on Saturday morning. However, Aaron ended up getting dehydrated and ill because he was extremely reluctant to use the foul smelling facilities. Michael had taken him into town to hang out in some air conditioning that had clean bathrooms, while sipping on a beverage. Aaron picked some red Gatorade (atleast, I think that is what Michael said). I talked to them both while they were at the store and Noah and Eve got to tell Aaron they loved him, too. When I got the phone back Aaron said, "Here's dad. I've got to go!" Michael said he would call me later with an update. Instead, two hours later they walked through the door. Aaron was wearing one of Michael's work shirts over his own shorts and he was bare foot. He immediately went up stairs and got in the tub. Michael came in to inform me that Aaron had thrown up the moment he got in the truck. He was able to cover himself, Michael and the dashboard. JOY!
I went up to double check on Aaron who lay miserably floating in the tub of tepid water. Then, I went out to see what I could do to help clean up. Michael gave me the trash bag full of fouled clothing which I put in a hot water and detergent soak. Unfortunately, I have a pair of really nice suede sneakers that I don't know how to remove vomit from the surface. I suppose I'll look up Hints from Heloise? Michael said he would tackle the truck clean up on his own and with the help of Febreeze after the disinfecting was completed.
Aaron immediately laid down after getting washed and dressed. He napped for hours while Michael relaxed in front of the last few episodes of "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan. Aaron ended up coming upstairs around 10:15pm. and listened to the last chapters of the family book reading.
This morning around 4 am. I heard, "MOM!" and Aaron was in the bathroom. This occured two more times. At 7:30 am Aaron plopped himself beside me in my room and pronounced himself well again. I said, "Good deal!"

::::::::::::::::::::::::Michael::::::::::

The guys at Michael's office are having fun with this game Aaron showed Michael that allows you to create your own super heros. The joke in the office is that Michael is a tree hugger, so Michael's friend, Ed, created a super hero called Sargeant Nature using Hero Machine:

I thought it was hilarious, so I decided to play along with some of my digital supplies and this is what I came up with:

:::::::::::::::::::::::::The Sisters Grimm: The Unusual Suspects

As Daphne repeats a few time in the book, "That's so punk rock!" The book was a fast paced fight to the finish to stop the evil Rumpelstiltskein and his minions. The underlying theme of this, second, installment of the Sisters Grimm was the horrible toll prejudice and hate can take on the person who is letting those emotions fester. I thought the deeper meaning was excellent and put forth very creatively. The books, again, are not for the young, or who tend to have nightmares. Scary things happen in this series and folks don't always come out alive. The characters aren't one note characters, which always helps a plot. Snow White adds a little bit of Feminism and action hero bits to liven up the story line. She is definitely no "Woe is me!" shrinking violet type. She holds her own against several of Ferryport Landings ne'er do well Everafters. This book leaves with a very interesting psychological cliff hanger. Off to put in a request for book 3.

Memorial Day Update:

The kids got to ride horses during their climbing trip.
Twig Frames by Carol Abram

The kids hanging out on top of a rock.

I'm working on a layout of Rachel rock climbing and Aaron belaying her. Michael thought it was great getting the shot of Aaron helping Rachel.
I have had very litte computer time now that the kids are home and I haven't felt very well either. I even forgot to take Aaron to his first day of testing for the Iowa Basics Skills Test. It is a two day test. I did get him to the second part of the test today and he will make up the first part tomorrow. The test proctor had to take Aaron's watch from him because he kept checking the time.

A friend of mine and my mom saw this cartoon and made me a copy:

Seattle Post-Intelligencer is where you can find more of this hilarious cartoonists work.

:::::::::::::::Thank You Note:::::::::

Today I recieved a lovely Thank You card from the gentleman I made the slideshow of a Philmont scout trip. He was very pleased with the outcome. I used LightScribe enabled DVD+R with a 4x burn rate and it seemed to keep anything from stalling, or skipping.

:::::::::::::The Sisters Grimm:::::::

This book was a bit intense for kids Eve's age (4-6), and Rachel got a little spooked during the graphic ending. The author gets to introduce to the modern reader the authentic Grimms' tales, which have been very watered down by such cultural icons as Walt Disney. The kids were surprised by the original bits of the different fairy tale characters who are trapped in Ferryport Landing due to a strong spell. These fairy tale characters are called "Everafters" and due to a fear that they would come in conflict with humans the take on disguises and try to fit in to this community. Their are characters that everyone will be familiar with in this book, but the opinion that you have of each of them may be quite altered after finishing this book. Overall, the book is imaginative and clever, but be aware it is intense.

Here's another Rhymes with Orange cartoon that seemed appropriate for this book review:

::::::::::::::::Personal Project::::::

I would like to take our 2006 Disney World photos and create a slideshow. I already have all the music I need. The kids do love to see themselves.

I Have a Plethora of...

Layouts! If you answered "Pinatas" to that you are one super funny individual! The reference is from "Three Amigos" with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short.
If you haven't see the movie it isn't high cinema, rather it is quirky and fun. I guarantee you will have the song "My Little Buttercup" running through your mind afterwards and it will give you a smile. You may even start doing a little soft shoe number. Who knows? You may also start saying "Look up here!" ;)

and we will be heading out this afternoon to Clayton, Georgia. I suppose I should google that because I still don't know how to get there! (The world is round.) One important thing for Rachel was for me to cut a playlist for the cd that included Ray Charles music. She has been learning about him in school. She is amazed that he was blind, but accomplished so much. I told her about a car commercial made back about 1997 when Ray Charles got to drive on the Salt Flats in Utah. Michael and I clapped and laughed. Such a cool commercial!

I'll "see" y'all on Monday!

The Currant:

Chickens Feel Exploited Withhold Egg Production:

Chickens are withholding egg production in a show of solidarity against what the spokes-chicken says, is the unfair credit that the Easter Bunny receives on the commercial end of this Christian holiday.

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, **American Egg Board, **USAPEEC, was worried about the effect on the economy, not just the effects on the upcoming holiday festivities. Our hardest hit state will be Ohio, which is our top producer and here in Georgia, the number 10 producer of the top ten we have heard grumblings from Gov. Sonny Perdue’s administration worrying about shortfalls in the state coffers from lack of revenue. PAAS™ thoughts on the subject are dour indeed. Their spokes person said that if we can’t get those hens to stop their protest we could be bankrupt at the end of the month. You can’t dye plastic eggs with our product, our only hope would be that teenagers would stop using Kool-aid™ to dye their hair and switch to our product at extremely low prices! White House spokesman, Tony Snow, was contacted asking how the First Lady, Laura Bush, feels about the upcoming annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House Lawn. Mr. Snow, stated, “The First Lady is very concerned that the children and parents will be disappointed if a real egg is not used in this event due to the long held tradition. She also feels that replacing a real egg with a plastic egg cheapens the whole thing.”

Some children are unconcerned with the decision made by the chickens’:
A nine year-old, Rachel Taylor, from Georgia said in today’s interview, “Yeah! I mean who eats those dyed eggs anyway after they’ve been sitting in the hot sun and had bugs crawl on them. I prefer the plastic eggs because you can put chocolate or Starbursts™ in them. I even have my baby teeth in a plastic Easter egg!” Manufacturers of plastic eggs agree. Their sales are through the proverbial roof and they have increased production this week. The manufacturers are considering having the chickens start an ad campaign using their plastic egg products. This campaign would be similar to the Chick-Fil-A™ campaign, which employs cows to have people eat more chicken. When the spokes-chicken heard about this possible ad campaign she clucked her approval and laughed. She stated, “It would be nice to get some equal air time with those crazy cows!”

When asked where this revolutionary idea came to her the spokes-chicken said, “I was inspired when the farmer’s daughter came to feed us and she was listening to that new song by Beyonce Knowles called “Irreplaceable”. When she got to the chorus singing, “You must not know about me. I could get another you in a minute.” “It was so empowering! I was thinking why does the “Easter Bunny” get all the credit for the cute dyed eggs and the holiday effigy of him in your choices of milk, dark or rice crisped chocolate! Even the cartoons have such tales about an “Easter Beagle”. I know about this because the goat was watching television through the farmer’s window, while eating some washing off the line. The other hens clucked in approval and huddled closer together and began to chant and rock in unison singing, “You must not know about me.”

At the barnyard the situtation is tense where the animals have taken sides on this contentous issue. The pigs have chosen the rabbit’s side and the goats are behind the chickens. The local Easter Bunny Guild representative was on hand for comments in the barnyard. He stated that being an Easter Bunny was a noble and time honored position from, as far back as, the 1500s in Germany. “Our contract with these companies is honorable and not exploitive of the chickens at all. I mean aren’t they getting fed? Don’t they have a warm bed of straw to sleep on? What more do they want! This is a load of chicken$#!%” “You might want to say, ‘Hogwash’”, volunteered his friend the pig sitting next to him. A local pig was willing to speak to us in aninimoty to keep his, already tenuous, relationship amiable with the chickens. He stated, “I think this can be resolved quickly and fairly if the chickens were given a more promonite roll in the commercial end of things. They really are a bunch of nice peeps.”

The government has decided to send in its top negoitator in the morning. Many adults will remember him fondly and as a bit quirky. He has been in several films, a successful television show, and had his own chicken act. He is none other than, The Great Gonzo.

We can only watch and wait.

------------
Apple Computer’s and Pixar’s co-founder, Steve Jobs announced his newest venture today, PEAR. The Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif. was filled to capacity with women being the clear majority. The atmosphere in the room was electric and there was a hint of “Juicy Peach” tart fragrance wafting through the air as Jobs took the stage. Jobs spoke of the earlier success of Apple products and as soon as he mentioned the Mac the crowd clapped loudly and hooted and hollered showing their affection and approval of the design quality of the Mac.

Pear is designed for the world of digital scrapbooking. The billion dollar paper scrapbooking industry has garnered attention from all corners, and now the sun is shining on the burgeoning digital industry. The new Pear will allow digital scrappers to easily locate the different “Papers” and “Elements” they use to create their layouts digitally.
The software will allow for creating text on a path, advanced and customizable paint tools palette and drawing brushes. The Pear user will also be able to upload photos, create photo books, download songs, create slideshows, calendars, podcasts and music videos. The woman in the crowd got very excited when Jobs explained that the package included exclusive “Blinkie” making software. There will also be an instant messaging system. The crowd was sent into peals of laughter when job presented a large variety of new “smilies” created just for the new software.
The news of the Pear will, no doubt, spread quickly to the entire digital scrapbooking community thanks to the internet. Due to the Law of Unintended Consequences the unofficial tagline is: Haven’t you always wanted to have a nice Pear?!?

Lilburn GA. Mother of 4 reluctantly admits that her 6-year old son really does know everything.

Noah Taylor, a first grader at Camp Creek Elementary, was brought to the attention of International researchers after a series of cognitive tests including the Stanine (Standard Nine). He also received a perfect score on the CRCT. His teachers were astounded and immediately contacted his mother who though amazed at Noah’s test scores was quick to quip, “Yeah, he thinks he knows everything.” After more discussion his mother allowed for further testing, which was conducted at the Child Study Center at Emory University.

Scientists from Germany, Switzerland, Japan and France flew to Georgia to review data and do personal interviews with Noah. Members of the NIA (National Institute on Aging) have also been working with Noah hoping for a break through with such pressing issues as Alzheimer’s disease.

Noah’s vocabulary is littered with such words as “actually, perhaps, and technically”. Many of the interviews were administered while the little boy was putting together a robot from various discarded parts in his grandfather’s garage.

After weeks of testing and interviews with the local first grader his mother had to admit her son did, in fact, know everything.

A.D. IV ID. OCT.MMVI and Spongebob:

Aaron and I were not having a great morning going over his math work. He refuses to believe he got any of the equations wrong because if they are wrong he has to redo the problems. After talking with Michael, Aaron sat down to go over the math work. He was still being somewhat belligerent. Before we learn the new math concept we do a section of "mental math" where he answers questions allowed without writing anything down. Aaron decided to give me all of the answers in Roman numerals. He was trying to annoy me at first, but I started laughing and then he started laughing. I appreciated the fact that he was getting the answers correct and in an ancient numbering system. When the last answer was zero he asked how you stated zero in Roman numerals. The Romans did not have the concept of zero and here is a couple of fun links to learn more about Roman numerals and their calendar:

Roman Calendar ConversionsRoman CalendarThe initial 'A.D.' stands for ante diem - days before - not AD Anno Domini.

Two days ago michael and I made shredded pork sandwiches with pork tenderloin I put in the crock pot. It turned out perfectly. I cooked the meat on high for 6 hours in about 2 cups of water. I picked up some mustard based barbeque sauce from a restaurant we really liked in Charleston, S.C.

Most of the barbeque sauce we use in Georgia is tomato based, so finding the Memphis style barbeque was a fun departure from the status quo!

He watches the show with his 6 year-old daughter and is excited to be on the show. My kids get a kick out of spongebob and they really like "Labyrinth"!

One of Michael's associates at work sent this to him and I thought I would pass the laugh along:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal they laid down and went to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."

Holmes asked, "What does that tell you?"

Watson pondered the question. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Chronologically, I deduce that the time is approximately five past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, and then spoke. "Watson, you blithering idiot! What it tells me is that some thief has stolen our tent!"

This picture made me think of an album cover because Aaron is looking off the frame to the right so seriously and Eve is oblivious to the camera as she fixes her shoe, while Noah and Rachel appear to be ready to yell "Boo" at an unexpecting Aaron.
