My Quirks:

1. I write notes on scraps of paper like old bills, envelops that the old bills came in, flyers, pamphlets, the kids school papers that don't have to be returned.

2. I prefer to have the window down in the car, as opposed to turning on the air conditioner. The cold air blowing on me gives me a headache.

3. I like to go to the hardware store and walk all of the different aisles, but I'm like a moth when it comes to the lighting aisle. Shiny, bright things...so cool!

4. I like to watch forensic shows, but would probably pass out at a real crime scene.

5. I hate the sound of people trimming their finger nails, or toe nails...especially in public. GET A ROOM PEOPLE!

6. I know most of the lines to the movie "Murder By Death" and I enjoy listening to it when I'm scrapbooking. I have the movie playing downstairs and I've watched it so many times I know what is going on in the scene.

::::::::::::::::Tennis, Anyone?::::::

The free movie was a bust because the rooms were full, so we stopped off at Play It Again Sports to get Rachel a racket for her beginners tennis class next week. The guy didn't have her size so he suggested Target. We left that store and walked down to Books For Less and bought a couple of drawing books. One was how to draw monsters and the other one was how to draw animals. Rachel chose an American Girl Book about Addy. She also got a book called Ghost Writer.
We finally loaded up and went to Target and picked up a racket for Rachel and her siblings. Eve said she wanted to learn tennis, too. Noah said he just wanted to play for fun with his sisters. I called the Community School when I got home and they had an opening in Eve's age group, so I signed her up. She will taking on the same day as Rachel, but a half an hour after Rachel's class is over.

I backed cookies when we got home from the store. I bagged up a dozen and went visiting teaching with Eve. She wanted to tag along.

Not much else, but trying to stay cool.

Take Care! :)

Update

Hey all! Thanks for those who called and emailed about my dad. I just spoke with my stepmom for another follow-up. My dad is home. The doctors found that he was negative for cardiac enzymes, which indicate a heart attack. He passed his stress test and blood work. They are uncertain what caused his excruciating pain. He woke up with his jaw numb and his left arm completely numb, the other day. He has been in pain for about 2 months, but doesn't complain about things. He is a worker and is always up early to do things and for him to complain it has to be pretty horrible. My sister, Katherine, has made an appointment for further tests with another physician. They will try to determine what could be causing his symptoms.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your prayers and kind words!

:::::::::::::A Walk in the Park x 2:::::

I did my 4 mile walk, yesterday with a little bit of sprinkling rain. The clouds blew away and the sun came out shortly before I finished. Then, when Michael came home from work he invited me to walk with him. I wasn't going to pass on a chance to walk and talk with my sweetheart, so I donned my shoes again (my fabulous 7eeee's of joy!) We had a 4 mile walk to the park, around and back. We discussed the podcast of the wave/particle duality from Astronomy cast and extrapolated that to a comparison on evolution and creationism. Light walking topics, indeed!

For today's walk I listened to Astronomy Cast discussing "Space Junk" and "Detectors". I don't only listen to podcasts; I also love a bit of Earth, Wind and Fire to get the feet going. :)

::::::::::::::::::::::Events of the day:::::::::::

When Michael got home from work we all went to Sangria's for dinner. Then, a family trip to the grocery store, which went surprisingly smooth. Back home to back peanut butter cookies and a batch of mini chocolate chip cookies.
Noah was in charge of F.H.E. and he had as pick names for Random Acts Of Kindness for the week. He was so excited to explain how it all worked.

Everywhere we went we took along a paper fly on a stick. Eve's teacher wants the paper fly to go with her on all of her outings. The idea is from the book Diary of a Fly. The poor fly is about to fall apart in just a few of our wanderings.

is interning as a designer at Scrapbookgraphics and she was so kind as to send some of her new designs for me to create some layouts. Here are a few:

::::::::::::::::::Pride and Prescience:::::::

This book appealed to me to me in two ways when I saw it on the library table. One, it is written about two of my favorite characters, Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, and second, it is a mystery. I have been reading it off and on for a couple of days and I'm enjoying, so far. I'll give you a review when I'm done.

:::::::::::::::::::An Oldie, But A Goodie:::::::

Rachel was in her room giggling and she got up to show me what was so funny. She had grabbed one of my old books off the shelf and was enjoying it, thoroughly.
This photo is not from the book she was reading, but it was the only one I saw that worked on google. I picked this paperback up at a place that allowed you to trade in your old books and buy others. The last copyright date listed is 1973. Rachel loved reading about the antics of Hi and Lois' family. I think it is such a great thing to share a sense of humor with my kids...twisted as it may be!

Horsin' Around

A day late on Blog Day, but here are my 5 recommendations:
Concealed Stars Beth is a writer and an amazing lady. Well worth the stop over to her blog.

Pins and Needles Carol is one of the funniest people I've ever met. Her wit and humor come through in spades. I love her "Things That Never Really Happened" layouts. She is a super knitter to boot.

Free Philosophical Discussions I'm completely biased on this one since it is my husband's blog. I love to read his book reviews and his thoughtful musings are deep and never contrived. There is often fun geeky stuff there, too!

Paper_Moons Anna Benjamin is a super talented and creative lady with a heart as big as the moon. She is the queen of pink and of list making, too.

The Argentinian Digiscrapper Her heritage pages are amazing and I love her quirky style. She is in inspiration.

:::::::::::::::Medieval Times update::::::::

First off, we had a blast! The horses were absolutely astounding with all of the intricate foot work and even dance type numbers. The horses even were called on as mounts during a sword fight. I kept being concerned about them getting an eye poked out. The falcon was released for a free flight around the small arena and then captured a lure. Falcons have such a regal appearance. We ended up as part of the green knights supporters. My SIL recommended the black and white section, but the attendants at the front were so busy we didn't push the issue. Noah's favorite color is green so we just went with the flow. The black and white section is a great one becuase you are positioned mid field to see everything. The green section is on the section by the King's box. The nice thing was that it appeared that all sections gave you a good view. The green knight is the bad boy of the champions, which my kids thought was super cool. My mom purchased the kids each a one dollar pennant to wave for our guy. The kids, Michael and I whooped and hollared ridiculously for our side. There were a couple of times that the crowd is supposed to make the decision for life or death of a knight after a battle. My bloodthirsty heathen children, Aaron and Noah were like a page out of Philip Zimbardo's book. Noah being the biggest heathen of all with wild eyes and crazy hand gestures...what a nutter. The menu included vegetable soup, garlic bread, half of a chicken, spare ribs, herb-roasted potato and apple pie. The food was tasty, but what ever wasn't finished was placed in the handy-dandy Tupperware containers my mom brought. Our "wench", Kyle, said that someone bringing there own Tupperware was a first for her. After the performance we made the kids photos with the green knight and they got his autograph on their crowns. Recommendation: Definitely worth the price of admission. The horses, the falcon, the fight coregraphy and the food are well worth the price.

Sugar:

There are several definitions for the word sugar, but I am referring to the colloquial Southern term in this photo of me:

In the South the term sugar means kiss. So whenever family members see each other they might say, "Come give me some sugar". This is my grandaddy Bill with me at Christmas time.

I was able to do a marathon read at my mom's house on Saturday and a hour nap! COOL! Here is my review of the book Passionate Minds about the relationship between Emilie du Chatelet and Voltaire: David Bodanis does an admiral job relating this unorthodox relationship of Emilie du Chatelet who possessed a brillant mind for math and science and the life of Voltaire who became a renowned poet and writer, best known for Candide. Their story begins in early 18th century France where most marriage were made for political and financial alliances. "Love" was kept for relationships that were kept "discreetly" separate from the city your spouse was staying in. Emilie du Chatelet was married to an older man with the military and had 2 children. He was often away on duty and had relationships with other women and it was accepted by both of Emilie and her husband that she, too, would have her own diversions. Her longest lasting relationship besides her marriage was with Voltaire. They acted as each other's muse. Emilie could use Voltaire as a sounding board to figure out how to write more exactly what she wanted to say. Voltaire used Emilie has his inspiration for several of his characters and, for the most part, appreciated her critique of his writings. She often participated in his plays that they put on for friends.

My moral code is different from these two characters, but my serious ethos bent didn't keep me from respecting the talents of these two brillant people. The time in which they lived put them on the cusp of The Enlightment and dying before the French Revolution. They lived in an era of rampant corruption in the Catholic Church, a stagnant class system that created feelings of rancor from the lower classes, marriage was not based on love, which led to clandestine relationships that left both participants statisfied in the short-term, but bankrupt in the end as their deeper emotional needs were never met.

Emilie was able to help Voltaire with his science experiments, while at the same time working on her own experiments on light. They both entered their research for the Academic Prize. Though Emilie's was superior to all other entries she was given 6th place and Voltaire recieved 7th. Emilie also translated the Principia by Newton. Emilie was trying to bridge her understanding of the work of Newton and Liebniz, which was a Herculean effort because, at the time, you were in Newton's camp or Liebniz's camp. Bodanis points out Emilie, because she was a women, and was not allowed into the scientific circles of the men could see from a perspective that saw how these two, who both claimed to be the creators of Calculus, had research that could both gave useful information. Emilie leaned more into the Liebniz camp because he saw a Supreme Being's hand in the creation of the things she was understanding in the amazing calculations.

This book interweaves the bizarre political machinations of the time as Voltaire gets involved with Fredrick the Great of Prussia and the court of Louis XV. Voltaire and his friend Richelieu are the ones who introduce Jeanne Poisson to Louis XV. She later is given the name of Madame De Pompadour. Voltaire was hoping for control and influence through Jeanne Poisson because the mistress was a way to get the King's ear. His hopes were dashed when she had her own agenda.

Emilie and Voltaire's relationship becomes extremely strained after the Academy competition. The both get into separate relationships and Emilie gets pregnant at the age of 42. Emilie realizes she will probably die in childbirth. This is when she stays up for hours each day to translate the Principia. Her husband comes home to cover for her pregnancy, and Voltaire stays with her, too. Unfortunately, Emilie's foreboding feelings were correct and she and her baby daughter die. Volatire goes on to live to a ripe old age and write Candide.

I found this excerpt, especially, interesting:
"The British critic William Empson liked describing the power of ambiguity in literature. If an author insists that only one view is true, there's little we can do but accept or reject that view. It easily gets tedious, like a prose article we can read only once. But when the author holds two contrasting views and weaves a narrative where both are somehow true, then we're pulled to it more. (Good music is similar, being both powerful yet also evasive, so that we can listen to it over and over, our mind approaching it afresh each time.)"
I wonder if that is why the Bible and other books of scripture bring such lively discussions. There are so many different interpretations of any given passage.

Though there was a sad outcome for Emilie she wrote this passage in a manuscript she on "Happiness": It's rare to admit it, but we all secretly like the idea of being talked about after our death. In fact, it's a belief we need." It is kind of interesting to think that somewhere Emilie might be happy because I write this, today, 258 years after her death.

Stone Mountain Sweet Gum:
Pioneers once peeled the bark and scraped the resin-like solid to produce chewing gum.
The bark of this species of Sweet Gum tree is mottled with a variety of colors. The colors of this Stone Mountain Sweet Gum attracts both male and female Homo sapiens. Once attracted to the tree's bark the Homo sapiens deposit a wad of fresh gum to the tree's exterior, thus protecting it from the elements.

::::::::::::::::::::Music Maven::::::::

Eve and I had the opportunity to spend time together on our drive to her check up and she offered her opinion on the tunes we were listening to on the radio. The first song on our journey was by Evanesence called "My Immortal".
Eve asked, "Did someone die?" (Echo from the other day).
"I don't know." (I reach to change the channel).
"Don't change it. I like it!"

The next song was by a group called The Killers. The song is called "Somebody Told Me". She told me to turn it up, up, up!

By the time we got half way to the appointment The Police song "Roxanne" came on the radio. Eve asked, "What is he saying?"
I replied, "Roxanne."
Eve: I don't like it! Turn it off!

Eve also came up with her own song this evening:

"I want to be like my mommy!
I want to go camping!
I want to be like my mommy!
I want to send e-mails!"

(She was wearing panties at the time, so my guess is that she won't make it in pop music...good thing!)

Evey and Shostakovich...

Tonight as Eve and I were driving home from a baby shower NPR was playing Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1 as performed by
Lisa Batiashvili, violin and the New York Philharmonic. The radio was still on the station because I had wanted to listen to Says You ,but we missed it because it aired the same time as the baby shower. ANYWAY...the music begins and Evey says, "This music sounds like someone is dead. Who died? It is so sad."
I thought her interpretation of the music was so well put. In a review by ."Evan Stephens he says, "...the hugely popular Violin Concerto No.1. Together, they represent Shostakovich in his most disturbing symbolist vein of composition."

She often says similar things about how music makes her feel. She also likes to listen to classical music and Church music, which is easy to do for her when the other kids aren't clamoring to change the channel. I asked her if she would like to take violin lessons and she said, "I don't like to go where people will look at me. It makes me scared." She understands the concept of a recital and that music is performed for audiences. She really articulates herself, so well!

I've recently made several 8x8 purchases from Shutterfly during their sale + Free shipping. I have recieved 3 out of 4 books from my initial order. Unfortunately, Rachel's book was sent to Atlanta, but rerouted to Alabama, then to New Jersey. I'm supposed to give the mail one more day and if it isn't delivered call for a reprint. Rachel is the one most excited...wouldn't you know!

I really like the look and size of the book and Noah and Eve have had a great time looking at their books and showing their friends.

I had fun designing the covers. I hope you think they are as super D duper as the kids do. (I didn't watch Barney at all today, so I wonder why I'm using his vocabulary?)

************************Goaded Into a Purchase::::::::

Aaron used the line, "But it will make Eve feel better!" We were at the story picking up her prescription yesterday and Aaron saw the Pink Panther cartoon on video and pleaded with me to get it, so Eve would laugh and feel better. I wonder if Aaron is some undiscovered Urban Shaman? Quick call Frontline! I caved, but I wanted to, so does that make Aaron really more of an enabler? I remember laughing really hard at the Pink Panther and I wanted my kids to see the show. They also really enjoy Rocky and Bullwinkle. My favorite parts of those cartoons are the fractured fairytales.

:::::::::::::::::::::Ali Edwards::::::::

Interview with Ali Edwards found in the Scrap Girls Newsletter:
(Excerpt):

8. If you could change anything about scrapbooking, what would it be?
I think what I would really like to change is the misconception that the people who do this are the ones with tons of time on their hands. Come on! Everyone is busy; everyone has stuff going on in their lives. Creating is really a lifestyle choice.

:::::::::::::::::Experiment:::::::::
Michael, Noah and Rachel did an experiment on Thursday night and I am making a layout of their experience. I will try to post it tomorrow. They were so excited.

::::::::::::::::When I Am Old:::::

If that isn't already a loaded statement from an adult I'm not sure what would qualify. My mom set herself up last week by asking the question, "When I am old can Granny come live with you?" All four of the children were in the room at the time and Aaron, Rachel and Eve gave Granny Sue a quick reply of, "Of course, Granny you can come live with us." Eve added that she could sleep in her room because she had two beds. Noah on the other hand replied, "Why would you want to do that?"
If I got that last line wrong send me a correction, mom!

Trying to Finish Up...

some pages for the kids. I want to print some of their layouts through Shutterfly. They would be printed and bound in a library type book. One of the problems I have is not scrapping chronologically. I don't like to use a photo if I'm not particularly inspired to at the moment. So, I have been going into my in progress file ideas and trying to work with them to get pages for each of the children. I asked Rachel if she wanted a book that was mostly about her or one that went chronologically. She replied immediately that she wanted it to be personal. I've watched the kids get the first scrapbooks I made for them and want to share them with each other and friends. They love to share this way, so I will go with the flow and do each a personal book.

:::::::::::::::::Family Reading::::::::

Last night we read Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein as one of our filler books. The kids enjoyed the zany poems. This is our filler book because Rachel has developed a fear of the book The Westing Game because the characters talk about a corpse in the Westing house. She said it gave her nightmares. Since she is starting testing this week and next. I decided not to push the book. I received several book reviews from a friend, so I will put them on hold and let you know what I think.

:::::::::::::The Pursuit of Happyness::::
with Will Smith was a very well done movie. The character with his imperfections never stopped trying hard to do his best and stay with his son. Will Smith is an engaging actor and I hope he will continue making high calibre films. Will's son does an excellent job in his film debut. One of the criticisms Michael had was at the end of the film when they posted the finiancial success of the real-life character. Michael never likes money associated with the ultimate goal of being happy. This idea makes me think of Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof before he breaks into the song of "If I Were a Rich Man". Tevya, "Oh, Dear Lord you made many many poor people. I realize it is no shame to be poor, but it's no great honor, either. So what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune."

Where, Oh Where Has Victoria Gone?

...Where, Oh Where can she be?

My friend, Anna, made me laugh out loud when she posted this query to me at Digishoptalk.

::::::::::::::Noahism from Tuesday::::

"This stuff reminds me of heaven!" (said in a dreamy tone of voice). What so enchanted Noah, you may ask? Well it was Sprite, the elixer of the gods. No, we don't get out much! The girls were almost as elated when I put Grenadine in their Sprite.

****CONSUMER ALERT****
This morning I read this article:
http://wsbradio.com/news/041207listerinerecall4a.html
My kids each have a bottle, so they don't share germs (really it's because Noah won't touch anyone elses stuff...EVER!) I have printed out the refund form and pulled the upc labels and will try to get it in the mail today.
Here is the companies consumer statement: Agent Cool Blue

::::::::::Eve's Front Teeth:::::

are looking pale gray from the front and black from the back. Two months ago the neighbor boy was playing too rough and tripped her. She hit face first on the driveway. She ended up with a skinned nose, fat lip, bruised and scrapped gum tissue and very slightly loose teeth. I cleaned her up and kept an eye for any signs of infection. She healed quickly and as the gum healed the teeth were held firmly in place. Michael was playing with her and she threw her head back laughing and he noticed how bad her teeth looked from behind. I called for an appointment the next morning. Our regular dentist took x-rays of the front teeth and said that at least one needed to be pulled. He referred me to an oral surgeon, Dr. Glenn Maron, who has an office right by the Margaret Mitchell House in downtown Atlanta. This doctor will be leaving for Honduras for a medical mission trip to benefit poor children. Since Eve's tooth had an abcess I wanted her seen right away before the doctor left.

I called Michael and let him know what was happening and said I would be taking her downtown for a 3:00pm consultation. He knows I hate driving downtown's narrow streets, so he called me back and volunteered to take Eve to the appointment. I said he didn't have to do that just because I hate to drive downtown doesn't mean I can't. He insisted that it was okay with his supervisor, Richard, and he would take her. I met him at his work at 2:00pm and dropped Evey off. She was so excited because I billed this as "Daddy-Daughter Day!"

Michael said that Dr. Maron was very personable and talked to him like a colleague when explaining Eve's problem. The doctor even had Eve explain what caused the problem in the first place. He started the story..."So you were walking through the forest and you saw an elephant..."
Eve replied laughingly, "No! It was James! My face hit the driveway!" The doctor explained that he would make Evey fall asleep and while she was sleeping her would pull her tooth. She seemed okay with the idea.

::::::::::::::Random Acts of Kindness:::::::::::

Michael's blog has a great entry on one of our favorite commercials with a wonderful message.
In fact, Anna, who I mentioned earlier did a Random Act of Kindness for me when she gave me a beautiful kit by Gina Cabrera. She also creates amazing art work that she allows folks to download. Check out her site and learn about an super creative talent :Paper Moons

:::::::::::::Home School Stuff:::::::

Aaron and I have been using some great study materials created by a group called "The Standard Deviants". Our latest titles from their repertoire have been: "French: part one", "American Government" parts one and two, "Biology" and "Grammar".

:::::::::::::Poison Ivy: Update::::::::

My legs look muy nasty! I look like I had a motorcyle accident while wearing shorts. There are areas that are still weeping, but on the whole I think I'm healing. I love to tease the kids that if they don't behave I'm going to touch with my legs. SCREAMS OF TERROR! My arms look like a cross between ebola and leprosy...but on a very good day, OF COURSE! My stomach only itches a little, so I'm sure all be bathing suit fit by 2008! (One must have attainable goals! ;) )

Y'all have a FANTABULOUS day!

Noah Wisdom of the Day:

"It’s sort of okay to spread germs to your own family."

This piece of medical wisdom was in response to me saying it was okay for Noah to go to school with the start of his cold. I told him to make sure he washed his hands and coughed into the crook of his arm to keep germs from the other kids and the teacher, while at school. He said he should probably stay home because it isn't nice to spread germs to other people. Rachel and I laughed and told Noah that we appreciated his willingness to share germs with us, exclusively! If you are infectious and you know it clap your hands! (Then, wash them, of course!)

I got this envelope from Anna Benjamin's site: Paper-moons

I got these blog quizzes from Janna's blog

Blown Away

Genuine Spirit Kit by Michelle Coleman
Font: DBAnna

Eve was being blown around by the wind during our family vacation to the Grand Canyon. She was determined to climb everything and keep up with her siblings.
:::::::::::::It's A Down Right:::::::

Frog strangler outside! The rain has been going in cycles from light to sheeting all day. Aaron went off on his scooter to the library during a lull in the rain. I was about to go pick him up when a maniac ringing of the door bell sounded. I opened the door to a grinning, soaked 12 year-old. He simply said, "I'm fine. May I have a towel." What a hoot!

Michael took a nap while Aaron watched Noah and Evey. Rachel had a Brownie scout meeting.

Right now Michael is awake and we are watching the Eyewitness show called "Sight". Eyes are fascinating.

::::::::::::::March Madness at:::::::::

Anna Benjamin's site called Paper Moons . Check out her site. She has some Herculean plans!

::::::::::::::Just Finished::::::::::::::

this book:

"In the second to last of O'Brian's wildly popular "Aubrey and Maturin" novels, the seafaring duo are hot on the trail of Napoleon Bonaparte, who has escaped from exile on Elba and is threatening to invade Europe. The plot hinges on a shipment of Islamic gold that must be intercepted at all costs." * excerpt from internet.

I am in awe of Patrick O'brian's brillant character development and flow of information and dialogue! Two characters I had become accustomed to reading about died in this book. One who felt like a trusted friend and all around great guy. I was bummed, but O'brian is true to his creative muse, so I don't arm chair quarterback his writing.

My next read is Amazing Grace by Eric Metaxas about William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery. I have to hurry it is due in a week.

:::::::::::::Girl Scout Cookie:::::::

pickup is Saturday. I may need to pick them up under armed guard. Michael is already getting a shake down at work with folks demanding the goods. Girl Scout Cookies are addictive!
