Rain or Shine

I must give props where props are due. My husband is often asked to critique my layouts, which is brave, indeed. I know I ask, but that can be a slippery slope for a husband caught unawares. Luckily, Michael set ground rules for offering his, constructive, critism. Yesterday, I asked him a few times what he thought. His observations were very helpful. He also helped me use the smudge tool to get the reflections in the water the way I wanted. Just add this to the list of reasons he is "The Best Wife I Ever Had"!

::::::::::::::::::Book Club:::::::::::

I was invited by my friend, Kim, to join the book club with some ladies in our ward. We discussed the book Austenland by Shannon Hale. This was my first meeting and I was told this was considered very light reading from some of their past works. I, thoroughly, enjoyed this book and we had a lively discussion with prompts prepared, by Kim, on slips of paper. There were 12 of us and everyone got a chance to comment. There was a range of liked a lot to didn't like and it was fun to hear everyones' take on the book. At one point I got a moment to defend Mr. Darcy's character. That was fun...do you think Jane Austen we be smiling? They are a great bunch and I look forward to our next book and meeting!

:::::::::::::::::Introduction to Lawn Mowing:::::::

Grandpa Jim picked Aaron up, yesterday, to take him to mow the lawn of one of our friends. She plans to pay Aaron sometimes and other times he will use the lawn mowing as service hours for Scouts. Grandpa Jim showed him how the mower worked and how to be safe, then how to make even rows. Michael showed up to pick Aaron up and gave him pointers, as needed. Aaron did a great job from Grandpa's report. Unfortunately, the cold he has is kicking his, proverbial, rear end and he felt yucky when he got home and he skipped bowling league today. He asked to get a reading assignment so he could lay down. He is upstairs reading a kid's version of Julius Ceasar. Since we have watched the BBC version he should follow the play without a problem. I hope he gets well soon. He has to take the CRCT, starting Monday.

:::::::::::::::::Looking Forward To::::::

"Alice in Wonderland" this weekend put on by the local high school. Rachel and I are going with her Girl Scout troop. Fun girls, so I'm looking forward to the performance.

Take care!

Pleasant Surprise...

***Edited to add an amazing article about my great-uncle Dewey Posey at the end of this post.

:::::::::::::::Flowers::::::::::::

I went to Eve's preschool, yesterday, for the final conference of the school year. Crystal, Eve's lead teacher, was very pleased with how Eve is doing and said she is ready for Kindergarten. She said she hoped Eve got an older teacher with a bit more structure, so Eve would be encouraged to work to her best abilities. The teacher felt that a new year teacher might tend to just let her be because, in class situations, Eve is quiet and rarely gets into trouble. She also is one of two children who let the teacher know what is going on, or assistant information officer. So, all in all, Eve is doing well. As we finished up the meeting she directed me over to a bouquet of flowers and handed me a thank you card. She said the flowers were for all of the help I gave the class this year. I was pleasantly surprised. I find it really enjoyable to do things with the kids. They are a fun bunch. I don't do car drop off line because I have fun walking Eve to class, see what she's doing, say high to the other children and talk with the teachers. Crystal, especially, is out-going and really funny. Kimmie is quiet and prefers to listen and interject occassionally. This preschool is one that all of my children have attended and we have been thoroughly delighted with the experience.

::::::::::::::::::::::::Cool Book::::::::::::

This book caught my eye with the engaging and adorable image of a leaping, wide-eyed sheep. The book is really fun to read, as well. Russell just can't get to sleep. We go along with Russell as he tries several different ideas on ways to achieve slumber. The kids thought Russell's pet frog was really cool. If you are familiar with Mercer Meyer's character of "Little Critter" and that character's spider and cricket companions illustrated on each page...it's like that. This is a fun a quick read for any time...day, or night!

:::::::::::::::::The Weather:::::::::::::::

It looks like a beautiful day is shaping up outside. Unfortunately, for Rachel, the morning started with a sore throat and dry sinus passages. My guess is that she is suffering from the pollen explosion. After breakfast she felt a bit better. I hope she continues to improve because the math portion of the CRCT is being given at school today. She is intimidated by math test, but usually ends up doing fine. We all prayed she would remember the things she has learned and then we will hope for the best.

Outdoors: FISHING AND HUNTING IN THE SOUTH

Callaway's hook-up man

Angler shares his secrets with all

By Scott Bernarde
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 04/13/08

Pine Mountain —- Dewey Posey keeps no secrets about his favorite fishing hole of the past half-century.

He'll tell where to go, what to use and how to get a fish to bite. In fact, he'll even dig into his tan-and-white, three-trayed tackle box and give you the same lure he used yesterday to catch 'em.

No, really, he will. He has done that many times over while meeting and greeting out-of-towners who drop by to fish Mountain Creek Lake at Callaway Gardens.

Every Saturday during the spring Posey, 85, of Columbus, volunteers at the lake's boathouse to share his passion with park-goers wanting to rent a fishing boat. Guests try to tip him, but he gives the money back.

"I hate to see people come here on vacation and spend as much money as they do, and then not catch a fish. That breaks my heart," he said.

Posey, who may give a guest a handful of crappie jigs to use on the water, has had an open-tackle box policy. He remembers one time when a man and wife from Atlanta came to fish, but the wife hadn't ever caught one. They didn't have gear, so Posey gave them each a rod and all the tackle they needed. The wife caught more bream than her husband.

"He is a legend at Callaway Gardens, a legend on this lake," Callaway's fishing operations manager Carl Warmouth said. "I've heard people say if Dewey's not catching fish, they're just not going to be caught. He's caught so many fish here that he doesn't have to make anything up, and he loves to share.

"He has a genuine desire to help people catch fish."

The World War II vet who has been married for 66 years to his wife, Julia, has had a love affair with Mountain Creek Lake almost as long. It was after Posey's return from the war that a friend suggested that he try the Callaway lake, and he was hooked for good.

He has become a master of whatever fishing you want to do at Callaway's largest (125 acres) lake, from bass to bream and catfish. Anglers would be wise to ask Dewey first before hitting the lake. But that doesn't mean everyone listens.

Take a couple of brothers from Albany who often drive the 125 miles to catch Mountain Creek's plate-sized bream. Posey remembers overhearing the brothers as he was catching fish after fish. One kept saying, "Look, he caught another one" every time Posey reeled one in. Eventually, the brother said, "That old SOB caught another one."

Later, Posey saw the brothers at the boathouse and wryly asked them, "Would you fellas like to know what this old SOB was catching 'em on?" he remembers saying.

"They came back with a limit on bream. That tickled me. They didn't think about their voices carrying over water like that."

"That's a true story," Warmouth said. "I was here the day it happened."

Posey is the lake's volunteer coordinator who helps line up folks for projects such as the annual boathouse cleanup every March.

"I'm just crazy about this boat dock and the people who come to fish," Posey said. "I don't do it for the money because I like to see people happy when they go fishing. It's a happy thing to do."

::::::::::::::::::Books on C.D.::::::::::

For car rides I checked out a few books on c.d. from the library. The one Noah wanted to listen to first was Indian In The Cupboard by Lynn Reid Banks. The author also reads the book. Rachel stated to me that she really likes it when the authors read their own works because the emphasis and feeling are presented the way the author intended. We are on the last disk of the 4 for this book and I really enjoy listening to Banks read her work. If you are looking for something to do in the car consider a book on c.d. I would warn you if you have small children that the "D" word is used in this work a few times.

:::::::::::::::::::The Black Hole::::

We finished reading my old copy of this book Monday. Rachel and Aaron were asking a lot of questions trying to follow characters and asking about the science of what was going on. Noah was usually falling asleep half way through and Eve wanted me to tickle her arm pit, while I was reading. (She likes to have her arms tickled...strange.)

The book is about a small group of explorers from Earth that include astronauts, a reporter and a robot. This group aboard the Palomino happen upon the missing ship Cygnus as they are about to make a turn that would take them back to Earth. They do a fly by of the Cygnus, but get caught in the gravitational pull of a black hole that appears to not have any effect on the Cygnus. The Palomino is able to escape the pull of the black hole and dock with the Cygnus. The greeting on board and the crews meeting with the famous and infamous Dr. Reinhardt is a cold and confusing one for the crew. The sinister nature of Dr. Reinhardt unfolds to the crew slowly, but is an interesting story. The mystery of what the black hole is and where it leads is fascinating even in any inaccuracies. This is science fiction, so we did not put stock in the actual book explanations behind the science. The ending to the book left the kids pondering about the state of souls, which was pretty interesting to discuss. Light reading it isn't, but thought-provoking it is.

::::::::::::::::::Swim Suit Season:::::::::::

Has rolled around again to the delight of the children. Rachel had grown out of her tankini, so we went to the mall and looked around for a new one. Our Church recommends and usually requires one piece bathing suits to activities, but many of those suits expose just as much skin as bikinis. The point, in this directive, is to cover the front of the body and rear-end. I have always hated one pieces and find bikinis equally unattractive, so I was thrilled by the solution of the tankini. Our family is very prone to sunburn,even with lotion, so the surfer type shirts and shorts work great. The shoulders and back get covered and all the other extra bits and, BONUS, when you have to go relieve yourself you can simply drop your drawers without all the twisting and dropping over your wet suit to the yucky floor. We found Rachel's suit at Land's End at Sears.

::::::::::::::::::Homemade Chicken Soup::::::::

Michael made a double batch of homemade chicken soup with egg noodles. Half of his soup he took to our neighbor who is sick. Aaron is glad we have leftovers because he woke up with a horrible cold, actually he states he didn't really get any sleep. Since Jasper, the ferret, shares a similar immune system he is also the recipient of this nasty cold virus, but his hit yesterday. He was snuffling and whistling much of the day.

:::::::::::::::::::Cub Scouts:::::::::

Noah is signed up for Cub Scout Day Camp. He wasn't excited to go and I wasn't going to force him. I did, however, talk up the things he would get to do and he saw that maybe Day Camp would be fun, so he said he would go. He even followed up with me when he got into the car when I went to pick him asking me, "Did you remember to give her the check, mommy?" I was glad to see he was covering his bases.

I hope y'all have a great day! :)

Promised Fluff And Stuff...

:::::::::::::::A Walk In The Park:::::::::::

At lunch today I walked from the house to park, and back. It was a bracing walk due to the cold temperatures. Fortunately, my toes were happy to be in their new big square box.

After the walk I drove to Eve's preschool and had to wait out in the hall for just a few minutes because the girls were having dress rehearsal for their upcoming ballet recital. All the girls were excited to wear their costumes and all shrieked when we, the parents, walked in, to not look up at the front where Ms. Brooke had their costumes. Such excited little girls!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::Suspence and Sensibility

This book by Carrie Bebris is her second in the series of mystery stories using the well-known characters from Jane Austen's works. The main characters are Elizabeth Bennett Darcy and Fitzwilliam Darcy the beloved couple from Pride and Prejudice. Bebris writes in wonderful Austenian style, so as you read you are comfortable with the characters and the atmosphere she creates...or continues in this series. This book is like Nick and Nora Charles meet The Picture of Dorian Gray. The creepy Sir Frances Dashwood is introduced to the reader immediately, then comes into play later in the book. We also get to "witness" the budding romance between Kitty Bennett and Harry Dashwood.
I liked this book a bit more than the first. The supernatural underpinnings of the books are expected, now, and Bebris explains the historical background to the stories she weaves in the this much beloved couples' life. This was an engaging read and I enjoyed it. If you want Austen with a twist of the supernatural give this book a try.

Later, gators!

You Never Know What The Day Will Bring

***Post of a personal nature...not scrapbook related...will post normal fluff and stuff tomorrow.

::::::::::::Phone Call:::::::::::::

Michael received a phone call from his mom that his brother is at the hospital with chest pains, but no definitive diagnosis. We will call tomorrow and find out more.

:::::::::::::Primary:::::::::::::::

Eve gave a talk in Primary, today. She was so proud that Michael and I were there to listen. Michael went up to help her give the talk and Rachel had helped her write what she wanted down. A great team effort! Eve was so funny giving the "Royal Wave" from her seat behind the podium.

::::::::::::Mixed Feelings:::::::::

In the afternoon we drove down to one of Michael's brother's home to celebrate his daughter's 2nd birthday. We packaged the bead socks I made her in a little Chinese Take Out box with a purple ribbon. The kids were excited to see and play with their cousins and aunts and uncles. After being there for about a half an hour Michael's sister noticed that the grill was spitting flames out the back. I went over and saw that a paper towel had caught fire, so I grabbed it off and stomped out the flames. Michael's brother came over and took care of the hamburgers that had been a bit charred. The smaller kids were occupied playing with a small sized bounce house for jumping. Aaron walked up to me with a sad look on his face. I asked him what the problem was and he said that no one would talk to him. He said that he tried to talk about things that had interested his cousins in their past meetings, but they weren't interested. Then, he tried to figure out what they were discussing and talk about what ever they wanted. Neither thing worked. He went outside and saw one of the cousins from the other side of the family, a young boy, get shoved over with the rambunctious play. He went to help and was leaning over the jump house to extricate the boy when a high pitched, "Aaron is pushing us over and won't stop it!" sounded out. Aaron stepped away in utter dejection and huge tears rolling down his face and said, "I can't do anything right!" I told him he didn't have to put up with being treated like this at a family gathering and that we would leave. I, quietly, thanked our SIL for inviting us and told her we needed to leave. I then placed a call to my stepmother, Alice who was delighted that we were so close and said that we were definitely welcome to stop by.
The sad part about this situation is that it isn't an isolated event. Unfortunately, it has occurred since we moved back from Utah when Aaron was 4. His cousins have never included him, willingly, in any conversations or activities. In fact, on several occasions one of his cousins would proudly and promptly announce to him that their parents said they didn't have to do anything with him. It is with this type of welcome, or being completely ignored at every family event for 9 years gets more than a bit wearing. It reminds me of the comedy films where the guy doesn't seem to be able to catch a break, but since it is real I'm not laughing. I know that the seed for our family get togethers was started in the purest and for the most loving reasons by my late father-in-law, and I know for a fact he would unreservedly have hugged Aaron and told him he loved him every time. I miss you Rog, and so does Aaron.

:::::::::::::::::::New Boogie Shoes::::::: Actually they are walking shoes, but with a little music you never know... I got these shoes at Shoebuy.com I haven't bought a pair of close-toed shoes in about 10 years. I went to SAS and had my foot sized and found I was a 7 triple W, or 4E. The translation of this information in other terms means that, instead of a cobbler, I need a farrier. Luckily, Shoebuy had a Fred Flintstone shoe fitter on staff, so I am an owner of these SQUARE babies: I put them on and wore them around for 4 hours. Michael kept laughing and saying, "I'm just not used to you wearing shoes!" That sounds a bit back woods, but it is the truth.:) The toe box was just perfect. The usual squished and aching feeling I get when putting on shoes was gone. YEAH! Rachel, my square-footed daughter, thought they were cool and asked me to buy her a new pair of square-footed shoes. I'll have Shoebuy put their farriers on notice.

:::::::::::::::::::::Atlanta Botanical Gardens:::::::::

Plan A, yesterday, was to take the kids to the zoo. This plan had also been formulated by hundreds of other parents in the Atlanta area. The parking lots were full and the side streets were filling up. That morning I remembered the free passes for the Botanical Gardens that my mom had given me and popped them into my purse. Michael had Aaron run the walkie talkie over to me during a brief stop at the zoo. I was driving my mom's car with her riding shot gun. Noah and Eve rounded out our car's occupants. We, then, discussed impromptu, Plan B. The Botanical Gardens are on Piedmont Ave and we were on Boulevard, which isn't too far apart. We decided to take our lunch break at Zestos...a cool spot for malts, burgers, and fish sandwiches. We ordered and Noah was surprised to find his cheese burger had melted cheese on it. Rachel was able to explain that at school the cheese comes separately and is a solid slice...not melted, and you just plop it on the burger. We took that burger home for someone to eat later.

When we got to the Gardens the lot appeared to be full, as well. We drove up the hill as instructed, so we could turn around. Fortunately, at the top were a few vacated spaces, so we pulled in and parked. The weather was so beautiful it was nice to walk around and view the lovely plants. The kids had the most fun when a mother quail and her brood walked on the path in the Fuqua Center. They were absolutely adorable. The kids also loved the big bullfrogs in the pond in front of the center. Aaron was overly tired from a sleepover at a friend's house and found every retaining wall, or bench an opportunity to rest. Eve wanted to pick up the giant tadpoles and was sad that we wouldn't let her keep sticking her hand in the water. Here are a few photos:

Granny Sue with the kids:

We were able to see most of the exhibits, but a few were being refurbished. Rachel sprained the toes on her left foot the day before and she was having a harder time walking as the day progressed, so we decided to leave. We had fun talking to each other on the walkie talkies on the way home. Noah and Rachel kept asking each other questions from the dialogue on Monty Python's "The Holy Grail". Michael kept telling me I was leaving the button locked open on the walkie talkie, so my mom said I needed remedial training in operating the little thing. I just attributed it to my crazy thumb.

Some Seriously Funny Satire...

Michael found the following post on another blog and sent it to me via email and I laughed the whole way through. The by-line shows John Cleese's name, but the letter is a compilation of a few different evolutions started back in 2000. I checked it out on snopes.com

I laughed all the way through this one:

Dear Citizens of America,

In view of your failure to elect a competent President and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy), as from Monday next.

Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up “revocation” in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up “aluminium,” and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour’, ‘favour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix “ize” will be replaced by the suffix “ise.”

3. You will learn that the suffix ‘burgh’ is pronounced ‘burra’; you may elect to spell Pittsburgh as ‘Pittsberg’ if you find you simply can’t cope with correct pronunciation.

4. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels (look up “vocabulary”). Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as “like” and “you know” is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.

5. There is no such thing as “US English.” We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter ‘u’ and the elimination of “-ize.”

6. You will relearn your original national anthem, “God Save The Queen”,

but only after fully carrying out Task #1 (see above).

7. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. November 2nd will

be a new national holiday, but to be celebrated only in England. It will be called “Come-Uppance Day.”

8. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you’re not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you’re not grown up enough to handle a gun.

9. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

10. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.

11. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric immediately and without the benefit of conversion tables… Both roundabouts and metrification will help you understand the British sense of humour.

12. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling “gasoline”) - roughly $8/US per gallon. Get used to it.

13. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call french fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called “crisps.” Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with malt vinegar.

14. Waiters and waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

15. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as “beer,” and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as “Lager.” American brands will be referred to as “Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine,” so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

16. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors as English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” was an experience akin to having one’s ear removed with a cheese grater.

17. You will cease playing American “football.” There is only one kind of proper football; you call it “soccer”. Those of you brave enough, in time, will be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American “football”, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a

bunch of Jessies - English slang for “Big Girls Blouse”).

18. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the “World Series” for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable and forgiven.

19. You must tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us mad.

20. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due, backdated to 1776.

Thank you for your co-operation.

::::::::::::::::::::::Events of the day:::::::::::

When Michael got home from work we all went to Sangria's for dinner. Then, a family trip to the grocery store, which went surprisingly smooth. Back home to back peanut butter cookies and a batch of mini chocolate chip cookies.
Noah was in charge of F.H.E. and he had as pick names for Random Acts Of Kindness for the week. He was so excited to explain how it all worked.

Everywhere we went we took along a paper fly on a stick. Eve's teacher wants the paper fly to go with her on all of her outings. The idea is from the book Diary of a Fly. The poor fly is about to fall apart in just a few of our wanderings.

Weekend Update

:::::::::::::Conference:::::::::::

I had a great time watching and listening to Conference this weekend. My favorite part was hearing the Prophet speak so tenderly about his wife's accident and subsequent recovery. His ability to talk about something so heart-wrenching, then be able to tell the light-hearted part of the story is amazing. When he related the first words his wife spoke to him after a 27 day coma, that she loved him, then he stated her next comment about them being in trouble because she had forgotten to mail their fourth quarter taxes. He then said, "If she had said these in the other order I would have left her there!" The humor he brings lifts the heart!

Many of the talks focused on testifying of President Monson's calling as the new Prophet. It was wonderful to be part of the Solemn Assembly...even at home...to raise my arm to the square.

:::::::::::::Birthday Party:::::::

I did miss the first portion of Conference on Saturday to take Eve to a birthday party for a little boy in her Pre-school class. Ethan is one of only 2 boys in Eve's class, but he had a lot of friends from other things come to his party. It was funny to see Ethan sharing a chair with Eve and his plate. They really don't play together too much at school because he doesn't let Eve boss him around. She bosses Logan around from what I'm told. Ethan's mom thought it was so funny how excited he got when he saw Eve get out of the car. The kids played in the moonwalk, and on Ethan's cool play set. The party was space themed and everyone had a great time. Fortunately, the rain abated during the span of the party. They were nice enough to send goody bags home for the rest of the kids.

:::::::::::::Nim's Island:::::::::

Rachel received an invitation to go to the new movie, "Nim's Island" with her friends Sabrina and Lydia. Moms were invited, too. Lydia's dad decided he would like to see the movie, as well, so we had a fun group. The girls sat together at one end of the row happily chatting until the film started. I bought Rachel a box of Whoppers and for me a box of Milk Duds.

The movie was a fun adventure with Jodie Foster's portrayal of a neurotic, agoraphobic writer was great. Gerard Butler plays Nim's father and a scientist on an island they want to keep a secret. The devices used in the film to create dialogue between the imaginary character and the actual character work very well. It was hilarious during a shark scene in the movie when Lydia's dad leaned over to me and whispered, "We're going to need a bigger boat!" in reference to the Roy Scheider line in "Jaws". Too funny!

Overall, the movie isn't Oscar material, but it is a great film for a bit of amusement. All the principal actors do a wonderful job with their roles. Also, when you have a movie that contains scenes with flying lizards, you know it is quite light-hearted and fun.

:::::::::::::Book Review::::::::::

Carrie Bebris does a great job on keeping the integrity of the ,Jane Austen inspired, characters throughout her mystery book. The story begins right after the nuptials for Elizabeth and Darcy. The newlyweds are trying to get to Pemberly and enjoy the coming Christmas holiday. Unfortunately, the trappings of polite society keep them from their goal for a time. The couple is pulled into the wedding and subsequent troubles of Caroline Bingley. The story weaves in the conflict between reason and intuition with elements of the supernatural.

The author did a wonderful job with the characters in the book, but the story, toward the end, seemed a bit too forced and contrived. Supernatural artifacts and beliefs are evidenced throughout many cultures and are definitely found in England. I'm not sure how I would have presented it in the story, but it seemed a bit too flat. I am interested enought, though, to read the author's other books, so I'll let you know what I think of them too.

::::::::::::::Spring Break:::::::

is this week and the boys are already fighting and I don't have the ingredients for the food Noah will eat, so the week is starting off well. The weather is supposed to be warm with drizzles today. Rachel is happy because she got to read late and sleep in. I suppose that is one good thing.

Until later!

Chasing Squirrels

That is what Michael calls it when your just falling to sleep and you shudder involuntarily. I do this frequently. He has just started asking me, "So, did you catch him this time?" To wit, I reply, "No, missed again!"

:::::::::Typing test:::::

I saw this on another blog and it was a bit of fun. This is what I got:

57 words

Speedtest

Aaron took the test twice to see if he could improve on his score. The first time he scored "26" words a minute and the second time "33". He and I thought that was a pretty cool score.

::::::::::Friday Recommendations::::::::

Asiago Cheese bread and a breath mint, for after. I got hooked on Asiago cheese bagels and bread when I worked at the credit union in downtown Atlanta. Our branch was located in a, now torn down, mall called Rio, not too far from the famous Fox Theatre. In our mall was the Atlanta Bread Company. My co-worker, Meghan, and I would swap days for running over to grab some warm bagels. Since I don't have a "job" any more I sometimes find my Asiago fix at the local Target, but I do miss my warm bagels. If you haven't tried Asiago cheese bread give it a taste.

A Bit of This and That

:::::::::::::::Home School Article::::::::

Here is an excellent blog article by Bob Barr, here in Georgia. He attempts to rally parents to encourage state legislators and other leaders to speak out against the debacle created by the California court rulings that nullified the parents' rights and, effectively made each child a ward of the state.

::::::::::::::::::Pride and Prescience:::::::

This book appealed to me to me in two ways when I saw it on the library table. One, it is written about two of my favorite characters, Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, and second, it is a mystery. I have been reading it off and on for a couple of days and I'm enjoying, so far. I'll give you a review when I'm done.

:::::::::::::::::::An Oldie, But A Goodie:::::::

Rachel was in her room giggling and she got up to show me what was so funny. She had grabbed one of my old books off the shelf and was enjoying it, thoroughly.
This photo is not from the book she was reading, but it was the only one I saw that worked on google. I picked this paperback up at a place that allowed you to trade in your old books and buy others. The last copyright date listed is 1973. Rachel loved reading about the antics of Hi and Lois' family. I think it is such a great thing to share a sense of humor with my kids...twisted as it may be!

My Self-Professed Hippie Chick...

Text: Rachel is a 10 year-old that loves earth colors, Prairie skirts, and flip-flops (No Shoes Required is best). She worries about the feelings of others and befriending the underdog. No Gossiping! She believes in recycling and being kind to animals. She loves to write and illustrate her stories that often involve mysteries solved by intelligent and witty girls.

Who Needs Low Flow When You Can Get...

,No FLOW?!

Family vacations often take us to interesting places and some a bit more mundane. The kids thought the "No Flow" toilet at the public gaol in Williamsburg, VA was pretty fascinating. Aaron did the classic "man pose" of reading while sitting. You would think Eve was doing an Olan Mills photo shoot. I think she was bit confused. So this is my, tongue-in-cheek, rendering of our silly, historical stop.:)

::::::::::::::::Vimeo:::::::::::
I saw a link to them at Heather Ann Melzer's site. They are a great video site with family-friendly rules for uploading and sharing. Here is one of Noah working on his Pinewood Derby popsicle car:

Untitled from Victoria Taylor on Vimeo.

::::::::::::::::::::::Up Early::::::::::::

this morning and already been to the vet for Jasper. Jasper is old in ferret years. We found him as a stray, so can't determine his actual age. He is, at least, 4 years old and is suffering from a common ferret problem. He has adrenal disease. He had a shot of Lupron to see if it might help. Aaron and Eve played with him until he went back for his shot between the shoulder blades. It was funny at check out because the thumbnail of Jasper on the vet records is a cute photo of Aaron and Jasper cheek to cheek.

::::::::::::::::::::::Art Show and Book Fair::::

It was the Book Fair Shake Down by my kids. They know I love books and I love them to read, so the begging commenced quite early. I bought several books and one that had to be put on order. I'll have to look up the title and list it here. It looked like a really cool book. Then, we went to the gymnasium and purchased Rachel and Noah's paintings with a portion of the proceeds to the art department. My kids love Mr. Mazzata, the art teacher, so it was a good investment on two levels. We listened to the violin class play a short recital, then home for homework, chicken soup (homemade by Michael) and baths.

:::::::::::::::::Platelets:::::::::

Michael came home and made, aforementioned, chicken soup after giving a triple product of blood for The Red Cross. There are never many folks when he goes to donate. It is so wonderful that he makes it a matter of habit and unselfish love for his fellow man.

Later, gators! :)
