Game...

:::::::::::::::::::::::Tennis Camp:::::::::::::

Rachel and Eve had a good start to their tennis experience. The weather was in the high 70s Fahrenheit, low humidity with light breezes. Rachel is fortunate to have the 8:30am to 10:30 time slight, while Eve gets the hotter part of the day starting at 11:00am. There are 2 coaches and an assistant coach to help the kids. The groups were manageable at about 16 or 18 each. The girls learned what stretches to do before beginning to play and then how to hold their racquet. They also learned the areas of the court. Then, they practiced their forehand stroke, followed by backhand. Our kids are not athletically gifted (genetic...I think), but they both said they had a good time.

The Williams sisters are currently secure on their tennis throne.

Rachel was in the first group:

I love the shrugged shoulders and the funny expression:

Holly Hot Potato

That is a game based on the classic Hot Potato game. With Holly Hot Potato you just need to find a cute, newborn baby named Holly.

Check!

Then, you bring her parents some dinner so they will hand her over for a wee bit of snuggling and OOOOOING and AHHHHING!

Check!

Then, pass her around to each of your own children. If you have a Noah in your family be prepared for the transfer very quickly. Noahs take Holly Hot Potato rather literally and with a quick pat and kiss she is on to the next participant.

Check!

Always have parent supervision!

Check!

Leave before you wear out your welcome and once you have the baby fully awake and a wee bit annoyed.

Check!

Laura with sweet, baby, Holly.

Noah with a quick hug and kiss for the baby.
Eve and Holly.
Laura with the Holly Hot Potato transfer to Aaron.
Aaron agrees that Holly is a super cutie!
Holly then gets to Michael and is pretty annoyed at all this Hot Potato business.

Now we have her riled up and thoroughly annoyed it was time to end the game with a final pass to Laura. Welcome, Holly.

::::::::::::::::::::Kung Fu Panda:::::

Michael and I took Aaron to see Kung Fu Panda on Saturday. What a goofy movie. I giggled and guffawed a lot. The scene with Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman's characters with the dumplings and chopsticks was hilarious. The opening monologue is a riot, too! Mantis and the acupuncture scene hurt my sides. Funny stuff! I enjoyed the message of the movie that there is no secret ingredient, but to believe in yourself.

Jack Black's timing makes me laugh. He reminds me of Robert Downey, Jr. with that wonderful bit of sarcastic wit that makes them endearing and clever. As Po says in the movie, "There is no charge for awesomeness." Oh, but they will make you pay to see the film, sorry!

::::::::Recycling Party::::

Rachel is at a sleepover party for her friend, Julia. The theme is recycling. So Rachel gathered up the items in our recycle bin and took them to the birthday party. She also grabbed a book she had read and her friend wanted to borrow and wrapped it with some paper she found. She stamped the paper and used some scrapbook paper I gave her for the card. The recycled gift was something Rachel was excited to give and Julia would appreciate. Nifty idea.

Scouts

:::::::::::::::Scout Camp:::::::

Michael's blog shows the flag at half mast for the 4 scouts who lost their lives during a tornado in Iowa. My stepdad, Jim, wrote a blog about what happened and it was a wonderful tribute to those boys. There was one particular scout that looked just like Aaron and my eyes spill over with tears and my heart aches with recognition. My prayers are with the family and friends of all those who are suffering.

::::::::::::::How I spent My Summer Vacation::::

1. Mowed the grass...ran over poison ivy in the backyard. (I wonder if there are cortisone speculators like they have for oil?) The weather was really beautiful.

2. trimmed a tree (I have no SKILLZ at this and the poor thing looks sillier than it did before, but I can see the cars and kids a bit better as I back out of the driveway.

3. Used the weed eater on the edge of the road in front of my house. I really enjoy this activity. I did, however, put off weed eating a large patch in the front yard that has...WAIT FOR IT...WAIT FOR IT...Poison Ivy. I know, I should just go for it. What are a few oozing lesion awaiting my dear spouse who hasn't seen me in a week.

4. Listened to my kids giggle while watching Napolean Dynamite and Murder By Death.

5. Digiscrapped

6. Washed and folded clothes.

7. Shopped at Target

8. Told my kids to clean their rooms a GAZILLION times. (Note to self, repetition is not necessarily effective).

9. Fed those kids of mine who are too slack to clean their room.

10. Mediated umpteen squabbles.

11. Read a few books...I liked them, too.

12. Enjoyed several walks in the park, while listening to podcasts from Wait Wait and Astronomy Cast.

...Summers not over so we will see about next week! :)

My Quirks:

1. I write notes on scraps of paper like old bills, envelops that the old bills came in, flyers, pamphlets, the kids school papers that don't have to be returned.

2. I prefer to have the window down in the car, as opposed to turning on the air conditioner. The cold air blowing on me gives me a headache.

3. I like to go to the hardware store and walk all of the different aisles, but I'm like a moth when it comes to the lighting aisle. Shiny, bright things...so cool!

4. I like to watch forensic shows, but would probably pass out at a real crime scene.

5. I hate the sound of people trimming their finger nails, or toe nails...especially in public. GET A ROOM PEOPLE!

6. I know most of the lines to the movie "Murder By Death" and I enjoy listening to it when I'm scrapbooking. I have the movie playing downstairs and I've watched it so many times I know what is going on in the scene.

::::::::::::::::Tennis, Anyone?::::::

The free movie was a bust because the rooms were full, so we stopped off at Play It Again Sports to get Rachel a racket for her beginners tennis class next week. The guy didn't have her size so he suggested Target. We left that store and walked down to Books For Less and bought a couple of drawing books. One was how to draw monsters and the other one was how to draw animals. Rachel chose an American Girl Book about Addy. She also got a book called Ghost Writer.
We finally loaded up and went to Target and picked up a racket for Rachel and her siblings. Eve said she wanted to learn tennis, too. Noah said he just wanted to play for fun with his sisters. I called the Community School when I got home and they had an opening in Eve's age group, so I signed her up. She will taking on the same day as Rachel, but a half an hour after Rachel's class is over.

I backed cookies when we got home from the store. I bagged up a dozen and went visiting teaching with Eve. She wanted to tag along.

Not much else, but trying to stay cool.

Take Care! :)

Another Hot Day Ahead

:::::::::::::::Another Camp Update:::

Michael was able to update his blog, yesterday. I. also, spoke to him from the pay phone. He had a phone card from a previous vacation that had time left on it, so we didn't have to keep dealing with poor cell coverage.

Aaron was able to send me an email:
"Hi Mom. How'ya doin, so far i've fallen down and cut up my knee, and accidentally grabbed thorns =). I'm taking astronomy,personal fitness, first aid, fishing, reptile and amphibian study, woodcarving, oh yeah I sliced my finger at woodcarving, HOORAY! I bought a nice new knife with the money i earned its a straight blade it does not lock but it is spring assisted to make it safer, when you close, if you push a little on the balde a few times, there is a whetstone that will sharpen it inside the handle, its really cool. Im having lots of fun Gabriel is here hes having fun too, i miss you guys.
LOVE you guys,see ya soon
Aaron, Pokemon Wizard"

Here is part of my response: "So if you hurt yourself a few more times do you evolve to a new level? Your classes sound sooooo cool... Did you get all the thorns out of your hand? I'm glad your having fun! Isaac came by and I told him you would be back this weekend.Try to stop injuring yourself, if possible. Please drink water and bath...it will keep you healthier. I love you!!!!!!!!!!

See ya soon,

Mom of the Pokemon Wizard, Aaron :)

Talking About Yesterday

:::::::::::::::::::Scout Camp::::::

I was thrilled to see that Michael got a chance to blog about the goings on at Scout Camp. Here is a link to his blog, and he included some good photos of Aaron in his role as waiter. I have given Michael some photo suggestions so I can scrap them when he gets home. A new record high was set at 98 degrees Farenheit for yesterday in Atlanta. It made me nervous to think the boys were out in that heat. I know they have been taught the skills to stay safe. I also hope they emplement that knowledge, as well.

:::::::::::::::::Exciting Summer Adventures::::::::

Since it was so hot, yesterday, I took the kids about 8:00p.m. to the library. The 2 minutes I was in the "Quiet Reading Room" looking to see if there were any new magazines I heard a NOT whispering, happy voice. I went out so see an older man scowling at Eve who was chattering with a little that looked to be her age. Eve was using a step stool to touch a large, fake butterfly on the shelves. I quieted her down and told the girls to play over in the children's section. Eve, promptly, informed me this little girl was her new friend. The other girl, equally as promptly, agreed. I walked around looking for books Rachel might like, while keeping an eye on the new friends. They hopped on the library rug, looked at a couple of books, then they marched to the Teen Reading section. There they found a magnetic board with little magnetic words you could rearrange. They decided to set this board on a high table like Eve had sat in at a local restaurant. When Eve put the board down the stand popped out from under it and the board slammed over scattering word pieces everywhere. One of the male librarians was right there and said not to worry he would clean it up, but Eve, cheerfully, told him that she and her friend could get them. They got down, immediately, and cleaned up the pieces. They played with the word that neither could read, and had a comical conversation that eavesdropped on as I sat on the adjacent couch. Here is a snippet of things I overheard:

Eve: "I saw my friend's cat, today."

Danisha: "I have a lion in my backyard!"

Eve: "You have brown skin. My skin is yellow. My mom's skin is yellow. Your skin is brown. Why are you called black?"

Danisha: "I don't know. My mom's skin has polka dots. My dad has yellow skin."

***"Danisha, it's time to go!"...stated her older sister.

Eve: "Your sister said it was time for you to leave."

Danisha: "I know, I don't listen to her."

Shortly after that Danisha's mom came up to get her and the girls said their goodbyes after Danisha introduced her friend Eve to her family. I had such a blast being a fly on the wall and listening to the chatter of two, instant friends. Their stories were fantasy mixed with reality and told with such animation it really made my day. What a great ability to have to see someone, say "Hi", and consider them your friend. What a better world this would be if it was that easy for everyone.

Smiles! :)

Brave, but Anxious

:::::::::::::::::::::::More Fillings:::::

Eve was more anxious this morning for her appointment, but she still did what she was told. She reached for her tooth once and I had to grab her hand. She cried a lot more. I was at a vantage point where I could watch the novocaine shots and the drilling. It was interesting to see what the dentist has to do. I felt so bad for Evey because I know about the pain she was experiencing. As a kid, I had my two upper canines impacted in the bone, so I had two surgeries to remove the correct amount. The novocaine wore off the first time and I felt the stitching. All I could do was cry. The next surgery I was over medicated and it was hard for my mom to get me out of the recovery room. I have had different procedures that have been painful, but I keep in mind that if I'm still enough it will be done faster. Three of my kids can handle their anxiety similarly. I told Michael that Aaron took the new pack of floss to camp I picked up for Eve, but as long as he uses it for his teeth I was happy about that. I just need to run to the store for some more, today.

::::::::::::::::::::::::Welcome, Holly:::::

I hope to have some photos of my new niece, Holly, soon. I took the girls with me to meet her. She is soooooo cute! She was making the cutest baby sounds and the important ones like burping. She was swaddled and sleeping for our entire visit. The girls were under 12, so they were not allowed to hold her, but they did get to play with Holly's big brother, Spencer. He is a cutie, too!

::::::::::::::::::::Book Reviews::::::::

This book was very interesting with the author using his characters' Western ideas meeting those of the mysticism found in Shangri-La. The story begins in a desperate escape from war ravaged Baskul on a plane that flys in the wrong direction. The occupants learn that the unfamiliar pilot is armed and refuses to tell them where they are headed. When the plane crashes, the story begins. Conway is the main character. He is rather laid back and is able to keep his wits about him in the bizarre circumstances of being stranded in an unfamiliar place. Soon an emissary for the lamasery comes along and leads them to safety. The frustrations and the rarefied air provide a steady level of tension for the other three occupants of the plane. I enjoyed the conversations between the High Lama and Conway.

Two of my favorite quotes from the book:

"...then he stealed himself by reflecting that people who hero-worship must be prepared for disillusionments". pp. 168-169

"I suppose the truth is that when it comes to believing things without actual evidence, we all incline to what we find most attractive." p.222

This book by Stephanie Meyer, though a bit long, is a quick read. The dialogue and characters are not very convoluted, so you don't have to ponder any of the concepts. Meyer is compared to J.K. Rowling from the little of have read about her. I enjoyed the characters of the book and her writing style, but I find Rowling much more adept at fleshing out characters and using imagery to set a scene. I can see why this is a best seller on the tween scene, though. The scenes between Edward and Bella are electric and sensual without being skanky. The authors explanation of the attractive, floral smell that Bella gives off provides the primal sensations, and the gentle touching provides the tension and adoration for the romantics.

Overall, I could live without the amount of swooning dialogue, and giving the female lead a bit more backbone. I have yet to meet a vampire...I think...so maybe if I had I might cut Bella more slack. I've requested the next in the series, so I'll let you know about that one when I get my hands on it.

::::::::::::::::::::Boy Scout Camp::::::::

Michael emailed and called to let me know some of the goings on at camp. He said the adirondacks have been rebuilt and hardiplanked, which is a big improvement. They are also next to the archery range in a more central location for moving to different venues. The boys are full of testosterone and the heat is oppressive. He has and probably will continue breaking up and mediating squabbles. There are some cases of homesickness.

Aaron is the Senior Patrol Leader and has gone to a couple of meetings already. The camp directors have made it clear to the adults that this camp is run by the boys through their Senior Patrol Leaders. They said the adults were able to sit in the meeting, but not participate. Michael said Aaron hasn't got the respect for his position, yet, but is working on it.

Michael said the boys want to be told, repetitedly, their schedules even though they have pen and paper to write it down. He is sure by tomorrow they will have it figured out.

He thanked me from the boys for the lunch meat I chose from the store. They had expected bland packaged meats, but I got deli slices. It was funny to hear they were so excited.

:::::::::::::::::::::::Weather::::::::

Highs of 95. There will be a lot of perspiration, today! Oh, wait! I'm from the South. There will be a lot of "Glistening", today!

Take care! :)

What occupies your time? This is what Michael has been doing lately. He opens up his laptop, pulls up the tablature to a song he wants to learn and sits down for a spell. He is glad he can read music because it allows him to concentrate on the fingering. He is proud of his calluses, too.

Yesterday, Noah made a really cool marshmallow gun that had a chamber for minature marshmallows so you don't have to reload after each one. He was hot and sweaty at the end of the day, but said he had a great time.

It's Fun to Read!

::::::::::::::::::My Current Reading List:::::

I'm really enjoying this bit of mystery in Shangri-La. I'm a little over half way through and the book is intriguing. I really like the primary character, Conway.

...waiting on the bedside table is...

This has been, off the charts, popular so I decided to check it out from the library. I'll let you know if I'll be jumping on the vampire bandwagon.

::::::::::::::::::To The Farm::::::

Granny Alice took Rachel and Eve to the farm to play and, maybe, ride a horse. They were excited to take a trip to Alabama.

:::::::::::::::::Cub Scout Camp:::::

Noah enjoyed his day, which included leather work. His leather piece was shaped like a rocket ship. He said, so far, that is the only thing related to space they have done, but he looked forward to more of the theme to come out in the next couple of days. We swung by the store and picked him up a water gun because Wednesday is really more than just Wednesday. It is...Wet Wednesday! He came home and practiced. When Michael brought Aaron home from a few hours of lawn mowing and porch cleaning, Aaron took the opportunity to practice with Noah's water gun. Can you guess the target?

::::::::::::::::Hot:::::::::::::::::::

It was a bit steamy in HOTLANTA, today. I went for my walk at 9:30 and by 10:30 I was a bit wilted like my Butterfly Bushes. I read a chapter of my book and took a shower. The excitement never stops! Michael has set me up with some new podcasts from Astronomy Cast and Wait Wait, so I'm stoked for my morning walk.

Take care! :)

Brave Girl

:::::::::::::::::::Dentist::::::

Eve just got back from having a cavity filled at the pediatric dentist. They used orange scented nitrous oxide to prep her for the shot, and they used a mint numbing gel. She looked at me with a hesitant expression and her eyes got that glassy sheen from beginning to tear up. I asked if she was nervous and she nodded yes. She wanted to hold my hand, as opposed to me holding hers. I figure it gave her a small measure of something she could control. She rarely moved during the procedure. Her lip did slip into the little speculum that kept her jaw open and she would point at it with tears in her eyes. I was so proud of her as was the doctor. The novocaine is wearing off and she feels the pain. I can just hug her.

::::::::::::::::Cub Scout Camp:::::::

Noah is at camp for this week. It is a day camp so he goes in the morning and I pick him up in the afternoon. The theme this year is "Cubs in Space". What a perfect theme for my science guy.
